Sawyer County Airport Management Report
October 2026
(Provided by Airport Manager Derek Leslie)
-We remained busy through Labor Day but then activity slowed immensely. The next push will be for Fall
Sports.
-The Civil Air Patrol program has remained very strong. They have 13 cadets and 13 active senior
members. They meet every Monday night out at the hangar at 6pm.
- The State BOA has finished payments to each of the consultants for our ongoing Master Plan with NO
plans for moving into the ALP phase. This is somewhat unprecedented but it leads us into the next step
in the process which has been categorized as a ‘Triggering Event Narrative Report”. BOA is working to
finalize the details with the FAA. This “phase” is meant to bridge the gap between where we left off on
the original Master Plan and the start of the ALP (Airport Layout Plan). Lots of questions remain as to
how this phase is going to work.
-No new news on the snow removal equipment. A little bit of a recap on this topic; we/boa put out for
bid for a new suite of SRE equipment. The winning bidder was Miller-Bradford Eau Claire. They spec’d
out a Case 651G Loader, Kage BPS1220 snowdozer plow, Wausau Snogo Problast 2000 blower, and
Werk Brau 12’ angle broom. This suite was in the neighborhood of 500K of which the Sawyer County
portion will be 5%. The hang up is with the FAA and the waivers on the buy American act. We are not
the only airport in this same position currently. Superior airport also had Miller Bradford on the same
bid come in as the winner.
-Since there is no date scheduled for delivery, we are working on our older SRE and snow machine to
make sure we are in good shape headed into the winter season. Will Strabel has been contracted for
some repairs in association with both Sawyer County Maintenance and Sawyer County Highway.
-The fall WAMA conference is coming up in October. This year its being held in the Dells. October 26-
28th.
-We added another active full-time aircraft to the field in September. Our full-time based aircraft
number has been slowly increasing. Sounds as through another Hangar owner is scheduled to take
delivery of an additional aircraft in the coming month as well.
-Also, another Hangar at the airport is being retrofitted with new lights/insulation and heaters. 17 of our
26 hangars on site will now be heated. Suppliers on propane are a mixed bag, at least 6 different
companies service the airport.

Highway Commissioner’s Report
• Construction on CTH F and DD is complete. The projects went very well, and
the crews did an excellent job. The project came in under budget, and I’ll be
applying for our reimbursement through the LRIP program.
• Mowing has been completed throughout the county. Brushing operations have
started on the county system.
• Culvert installations have started for the Town of Round Lake. Moose lake
culvert has been completed, and the crew is currently working on Tiger Dam
culvert.
• Barron County has rented our mastic machine and bought material from us
to complete multiple projects.
• Traffic light inspection was completed at the intersection of CTH B and K on
Sept 28th. The lights and cabinets are outdated and will need to be upgraded
soon.
• I have signed the contract with Kueny Architects. We have started the
discussion of space and needs at our facilities.
• First aid and CPR training was completed on Sept 29th at our Hayward
location.
• As of Oct 1st, I have taken Sawyer County off actual cost. We were 1 of two
counties that were on actual cost in the State.
• I was able to secure 7.8 million in funding for 5 bridge replacements
including 3.5 million for the roundabout at the intersection of CTH B and K.
• Highway Dept is fully staffed at all locations.
