• Chequamegon 40 was held on Sat, September 19, 2026. This annual event hosted over
2000 “fat tire” bike riders from Hayward to Cable. Our staff was on scene providing traffic
and scene safety in cooperation with City of Hayward Police Dept, Wisconsin State Patrol,
and the Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office.
• We recently hosted a three day patrol rifle training in house with our firearms instructors.
The training was well received and offered an oppurtunity for the students to hone their
long gun skills and working together in team elements for room clearing and low light
operations. A special nod to our senior Court Services Deputy for earning the title of “top
shot”, congratulations to Deputy Caleb Jorstad!

SAWYER COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL AND CODE ENFORCEMENT REPORT
Animal Control Operations
As of September 24th, the revenue for Animal Control was lower compared to the previous month, there were less Dog Licenses sold and less dogs
admitted into the pound. Admissions to the pound was very low compared to this year, with only 2 entering the pound. Both were reclaimed by
their owner.
The Animal at Large calls for the month were the greatest volume. The overall call volume throughout the month was the highest it has been all
year.
Facility
No changes since last month.
Code Enforcement - Public Health
Continue to attend meetings and go out on TRH inspections. There were five TRH complaints for the month, two of which are ongoing as we try
to get in contact with the owner. One was for trespassing/parking on the easement, two were for over occupancy, and two were for not having the
required signage up.
There were three new potential Human Health Hazard Complaints that are being investigated. All three still need to be looked into along side
ADRC.

Average records per calendar day 6.6
Emergency responses 1,594 (90.6%)
Transfers and routine transports 114 (6.5%)
Primary emergency travel time 12 min average; 10 min median
Calls dispatched close together had longer average travel times. Given the fluid nature of EMS demand and the
geographic size of Sawyer County, consideration should be given to an additional permanent ambulance station
and a review of crew distribution and the overall EMS structure.

Calls Dispatched Close Together
Emergency dispatch timing shows repeated periods of closely spaced demand. Within 30 minutes of an earlier
emergency dispatch, 181 additional dispatch times were recorded, representing 11.5% of the 1,576 distinct
emergency dispatch times.
Time since preceding emergency dispatch Dispatch times Share
Within 15 minutes 75 4.8%
Within 30 minutes 181 11.5%
Within 60 minutes 372 23.6%
Primary emergency records dispatched within 30 minutes of an earlier emergency dispatch averaged 13 minutes
to scene, compared with 11 minutes for other records. Travel times exceeding 20 minutes occurred in 21.3% of
the closely spaced group, compared with 14.4% of other records.
Primary emergency records Valid times Average min Over 20 min
Within 30 minutes of earlier dispatch 174 13 21.3%
More than 30 minutes after earlier dispatch 1312 11 14.4%
Timing note: Identical dispatch timestamps count once; windows are cumulative. Closely spaced dispatches indicate potential overlapping
demand. Unit-clear times are needed to confirm simultaneous commitments. Travel comparisons use records with valid travel times.
Conclusion
As Sawyer County continues to grow, we should remain mindful of the potential for increased EMS call
volume and changing service needs. Given the geographic size of the county and the unpredictable nature
of emergency calls, current call volume and response data highlight the importance of planning ahead.
Without adjustments to available resources or how coverage is provided, response times may increase if
call volumes continue to rise and outlying townships continue to grow, particularly when multiple calls
occur at the same time or crews are committed to extended transport.
Ongoing review of staffing, coverage, station locations, and the overall EMS structure will help identify
ways to prepare for these demands. These considerations should remain part of long-term planning and
future committee and budget discussions, so the county is prepared to address changing needs and
maintain dependable ambulance service throughout Sawyer County.
