Sawyer County Airport Management Report
August 2026
(Provided by Airport Manager Derek Leslie)
-The airport was busy as usual during the month but we were down considerably in operations from last
years July. The timing on the bad week of smoke resulted in a lot of lost flights. Dozens of jets in
particular but recreational flying was down considerably as well.
- The Civil Air Patrol Pancake Feed/ Open house on July 12th went off without a hitch. They had a decent
turn out but numbers were down slightly.
-The Young Eagles flights at the airport is on August 8th. Free rides for all children ages 7-17.
- Work with the various branches of the FAA: There was an idea that came out to decommission the
Glide Slope/ILS system at the airport. The State BOA authored a letter and, in that process, we were able
to thwart the idea on the federal level. We were one of nine airports in the Midwest region that had
been put on the list. Also, the FAA has recommended the decommissioning of the runway 03 PAPI’S.
These are FAA owned and maintained navigational aids so the decision does not come to the County on
this. Numerous airport users and myself commented to the FAA requesting that they do not remove
them from service. No determination yet on that. The FAA and Charter Spectrum ran a new fiber line to
the south end FAA equipment.
-The State BOA gave notice that they are doing an overhaul on the State Municipal Financial
Agreement. Really hoping the promises made at our State Aviation conference start coming to fruition.
Most importantly a better accounting system for sponsor share commitments/obligations.
-On the Federal level, there is no news on our Master Plan and ALP projects. The State has given notice
to the consultants to finish the final chapter of the master plan. This action should help move this along
in my opinion when it comes to approval for the new ALP.
-We still don’t know on our new snow removal equipment. The likelihood of it being here for any of this
winter is becoming less and less.
-I took a neat video of a jet landing on one of the smoky days and it got over 144,000 views on
Facebook.

Highway Commissioner’s Report
• Crews have been crack sealing on CTH B from Frogg Road to CTH CC. Crews
have also been patching and fixing shoulders on multiple CTH roads.
• Mowing has been completed on the State system. We’re still mowing on the
County system.
• We have been brushing on CTH N and CC. We brushed the intersection on
CTH NN and N as visibility was limited. We also completed brushing through
6-mile and currently working on CTH N towards CTH E.
• County F and DD construction will start on Aug 10th with the shaping of the
roadway followed by paving operations starting Aug 12th.
• Construction has started on STH 27 from Carrol Drive to Boylan Road.
Expect traffic delays due to flagging operations. STH 70 project has been
completed from CTH GG to Price County line.
• I have the final walk-through on the CTH D Chippewa River Bridge Thursday
Aug 6th. Plan is to open the bridge on Aug 7th.
• Still waiting for the last 2 appraisals for the CTH E project. We submitted
all the final documents for the project. Our construction estimate is $350k
above what is currently programmed. The State is aware of this, and I’ll be
submitting a change management request.
• My application was selected for an LSSIP award. We received $118,800.00
for a small structure replacement on CTH W by Connors Lake. There were
only 101 projects selected.
• We still have 1 full-time driver / operator position open at our Hayward
location.
