The proposed grant work will focus on engaging and educating stakeholders on aquatic species in lakes, rivers, and streams within southeastern Wisconsin. As part of this project, SEWRPC is planning to host educational workshop opportunities for stakeholders. Workshop participants will become familiar with aquatic species in their area and learn how to identify aquatic invasive species from their native look -alikes. Although there are many tools and resources available to help with species identification, awareness of these tools and the ability of lake stakeholders to make use of them is an ongoing challenge. Walworth County’s Land Use and Resource Management Department routinely receives inquiries and requests from area lake groups and community members to provide identification resources and services. Such a workshop would meet this need within our county. The Walworth County Land Use and Resource Management Department supports and encourages funding for this project to help establish networks of informed, trained, and active stakeholders to help protect their lakes. The proposed grant work will focus on reducing nonpoint source pollution within Geneva Lake through implementation of one or more agriculture conservation practices within the watershed, as identified by the Geneva Lake Management Plan. If awarded, grant funds will be utilized to supplement cost -sharing for the installation of runoff best management practices within the watershed. Anticipated practices include installation of grass waterways, a rock waterway, a water and sediment control basin, and other potential practices to reduce nutrient loading into the watershed and improve water quality within Geneva Lake. Walworth County’s Land Use and Resource Management (LURM) Department will provide technical assistance, coordination with participating landowners, and oversee site -specific planning, design, and implementation of the conservation practices, should funding be awarded. This project is consistent with conservation activities currently undertaken by LURM and the goals of Walworth County’s Land and Water Resource Management Plan. This work is integral to the protection and health of Walworth County’s lakes and streams , and LURM supports and encourages funding for this project. The proposed grant work will focus on continuing to expand the Coalition’s outreach and prevention programing surrounding the presence of New Zealand mudsnails within Turtle Creek. Invasive New Zealand m udsnails were first discovered in Turtle Creek in 2022. The snails are easily transported and lack viable options to control the species’ spread. Response efforts have been focused on prevention practices and delineating the population. This grant woul d extend early detection monitoring efforts to several vulnerable stream locations in Walworth, Rock , Dodge , and Jefferson counties. It would also provide for installation of prevention practices such as boot brushes. It is LURM’s intent to aid in the installation of these practices and offer assistance with volunteer coordination as part of the project, should funding be awarded. This programming is consistent with prevention activities currently undertaken by LURM and the goals of Walworth County ’s Land and Water Resource Management Plan.
