Main Street Updates – Presentation: Downtown alley analysis
Shively gave a presentation of the work that Toole Design Group completed for the Riverwalk and the
alley between Main Street and Second Street. This work was done as part of the preparation for the
Downtown Project, a Council Strategic Initiative, that will address the aging infras tructure in the
downtown area. She reviewed the findings of the consultant team on opportunities and challenges
related to alley usage, business access, utility relocation, and placemaking. The study include s
recommendations for future usage, improved bu siness access, utility locations, stormwater
management, wayfinding, and placemaking both during and after the reconstruction of downtown public
infrastructure.
Shively noted that this is a high -level analysis and that it did not get down to the level of detail to
determine exactly what should happen where. At some point in the future, engaging with building and
business owners can build on this initial work to c ome up with ideas and solutions that could be
considered by the private property owners and businesses. The Board discussed holding a public
information meeting in 2026 to share what is known about the downtown project and provide an
opportunity to connec t. Magnus shared examples of incorporating public art and other amenities for
placemaking; the Board discussed other funding options for art and amenities downtown.
Other Main Street Updates
The Board discussed the possibility of coordinating garbage and snow removal for the downtown area
to create efficiencies. Larson noted that she will be updating the postcard to send to downtown building
and business owners.
