Agriculture: Aerica Bjurstrom, Dairy Educator • A farm tour at Breakfast on the Farm for the general public and farmers, where I guided visitors through a working dairy farm, explained modern dairy management practices, answered questions about animal care and milk production, and connected consumers with agriculture to increase understanding, build trust, and strengthen relationships between farmers and their communities. • An educational article for dairy producers and agriculture professionals, where readers learned practical strategies to maximize replacement heifer success from birth through first calving, to improve herd replacement efficiency, profitability, and long-term dairy sustainability. • National Association of County Agriculture Agents Annual Meeting/Professional Improvement Conference (NACAA AM/PIC) – I attended the NACAA AM/PIC in Denver, CO in July. I am the NACAA liaison to the Outstanding Farmers of America organization, so I helped recruit nominees from membership. I also attended professional development presentations, a tour, and networked with colleagues from other states. My trip was fully funded by NACAA while I am the OFA liaison through 2028. • An ongoing monthly electronic newsletter for farmers, agriculture professionals, and agriculture service providers, where timely research-based information, management strategies, industry updates, and educational opportunities are shared to support informed decision-making, improve farm productivity and sustainability, and strengthen the overall agricultural community. Crops and Soils/Nutrient Management: Chris Clark, Outreach Specialist • Chris attended Farm Technology Days in Stratford, WI with other Extension staff of northern WI. Shared details on who might be their local Extension contact, to random weed, insect and weather extremes. • Chris helped at the July 25 in-person SnapPLus V3 software training for planners from Brown, Kewaunee and Door. The event was hosted by Kewaunee Co. Land and Water and training provided by Chris of Extension and Andrea of DATCP. • Chris has been helping with the Badger Crop Connect webinar series. There are 5 webinars left. Aug 27 will focus on soil, and Sept 10 will focus on cover crops. You can register and watch archives of the presentations on YouTube. https://cropsandsoils.extension.wisc.edu/programs-3/badger-crop-connect • Chris did a presentation on ready to use field day activities for the Wisconsin Association of Ag Teachers summer conference. • Chris and team have been working on adding interactive portions to winter nutrient management training as well as a coordinated workbook farmers can take home with them. • Chris Attended the UW Madison Forage Field Day which this year was hosted at Marshfield Ag Research Station. • Local Research updates: The Nitrogen/manure research project in Kewaunee Co just finished its 3rd cutting of the Italian ryegrass test plots. This crop loves manure and the project is trying to nail down the sweet spot for nitrogen rate with manure that is economic and still creates good feed quality (crude protein). Page 5 of 20 Door July/August 2026 Report The University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension provides equal opportunities in employment and programming in compliance with state and federal law. • Chris has teamed up with Dairy Educator Aerica B on the alfalfa nutrient use statewide research project. They just took 4th cutting alfalfa biomass samples. Preliminary research is showing that the uptake of nutrients like potassium and phosphorus is higher than the last time the work was done and is currently used in the alfalfa recommendations. • Chris presented on potassium in alfalfa at the Outagamie Twilight Forage Association meeting with 55 people in attendance. • Chris is serving on the interview search and screen panel for a new statewide Soil Fertility Specialist. Health and Well-Being: Laura Apfelbeck, Nutrition Coordinator • Three 5-week nutrition education series for low-income youth where they learn about eating a variety of foods from MyPlate, label reading, culinary skills, and hand washing. The goal of this effort is to encourage healthy habits in school and at home. • Planning an event in collaboration with food pantries to help individuals and families with limited income improve access to oral hygiene supplies and dental care, while also providing education on tooth-friendly foods and the connection between nutrition and oral health. • An effort to increase healthy food access for food pantry guests in Sturgeon Bay; a Buy One, Give One (BOGO) initiative was implemented at the local farmers market, allowing shoppers to purchase additional produce for donation to a local food pantry. The goal of this initiative was to strengthen community engagement, support local farmers, and increase the availability of fresh, locally grown produce for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. • Engagement with the Brown County Hunger Coalition where coalition members identified collective purchase of produce from local growers as an interest area for future and asked to learn more about how Manitowoc, Kewaunee, and Door Counties had succeeded in doing so. This effort is designed to share knowledge and experience beyond regional borders. Human Development and Relationships: Paul Salm, Educator • An ongoing, monthly digital skills workshop for older adults. The goal is to improve digital skills, address relevant topics, and optimize the use of technology for financial, mental, and physical health in Door County. • Planning for an expansion of Extension programming for older adults in collaboration with the ADRC of Door County, the Town of Union, and Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church in Ellison Bay. The goal is to engage program participants in evidence-based programming that will increase social connection and community capacity to successfully age in place. • Planning AHEAD is a 7-session course that helps adults of all ages to make end-of-life financial, healthcare, and final wishes decisions in order to reduce the stress experienced by survivors and to ensure that their wishes are honored. • Aging-Friendly Door County: Planning for a 7-part series for older adults in collaboration with the Aging Coalition of Door County. The goal is to create awareness of and increase access to community resources that support aging-in-place. • Planning for WeCope, a 7-week, mental health program for adults. The goal is to provide participants with an evidence-based program designed to teach practical strategies for managing stress and building emotional resilience. The goal is increased utilization of healthy coping skills and positive self-management, and increased social connection. Page 6 of 20 Door July/August 2026 Report The University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension provides equal opportunities in employment and programming in compliance with state and federal law. Positive Youth Development: Candis Dart, 4-H Educator • Door County 4-H at the Boys & Girls Club - Agriculture and Chick Quest: A multi-week program for youth in 2nd and 3rd grade to learn about agriculture and poultry science. Youth will gain hands-on knowledge and experience while learning about the importance of agriculture and poultry science - including the life cycle of a chicken, incubation and embryology, and poultry careers. • Door County 4-H Adult Leaders Association Meetings: Monthly meetings of the Door County 4-H Adult Leaders Association where the volunteer members are provided with support, updates, and oversight from the Door County 4-H Program Educator. Value Added – Extension Working in Wisconsin • Covering Wisconsin creates education, outreach, and promotions messaging and tools for the public that are disseminated through myriad formats and venues around Wisconsin (e.g., toolkits for community collaborators, social media campaigns, billboards, streaming digital ads, resource events and fairs, trainings for professionals, and health insurance literacy "How To" web pages with printable PDF versions). Through this programming, we help people in Wisconsin obtain, effectively understand, and utilize health insurance, reducing the number of uninsured and underinsured people in our state. Over the past 12 months, this included 16,914 people engaged at outreach events and trainings, 34,221 materials distributed, 181 professional trainings conducted, and over 900,000 views on social media and Google. • Natural Resources: An in classroom and field training for DNR/LWCD/private sector consulting staff and county/tribal health department staff working with the agricultural and rural communities focusing on understanding the geology of northeastern Wisconsin, the unique risks posed by shallow and karst bedrock, and the research behind bacterial/pathogen and nitrate contamination of groundwater/drinking water. Participants will use the knowledge gained when working with landowners to prevent contamination and better understand/investigate the causes of groundwater contamination. The earthen dike is a key feature of a water and sediment control basin, a practice designed to trap sediment and reduce runoff. The original basin was designed and constructed by the SWCD in 2001, while the earthen dike was pre-existing. Recently identified structural damage, attributed to burrowing animals, caused a partial collapse of the earthen dike. At this time, SWCD assessment believes the control basin is continuing to serve its designed function, reducing phosphorus coming from an impaired intermittent tributary before reaching the Ahnapee River. The threat to surface waters exists if the dike were to fail completely, releasing years of accumulated sediment and nutrient depositions downstream into the Ahnapee River.
