Page 7 of 40 Page 7 of 42 Lois Bielefeld Saturday, August 14 pm Gallery 3, Ruth Morton Miller Mezzanine Join us for an Artist Talk with Lois Bielefeld, the Milwaukee-based multimedia artist behind Lois Bielefeld | 12 x 12 Project —featuring a portion of their ongoing series, To Commit to Memory. The project centers on Bielefeld's parents and the home that has shaped their shared history, beginning with a recurring morning ritual: the artist's mother, an Evangelical Christian, reciting Scripture from memory while holding a plank position. Through collaborative portraits, house studies, and video works, Bielefeld traces how memory lives not only in recollection, but in the body, the home, and the rituals we repeat without noticing. Bielefeld will discuss the project's evolution, their collaborative process with their parents, and the ideas shaping their broader photographic practice. A public reception, free and open to all, follows the talk. Page 9 of 40 Page 9 of 42 About the Artist Lois Bielefeld (b. 1978) is a Milwaukee-based multimedia artist whose practice examines the social and psychological structures embedded within everyday life. Working through extended, research-driven projects, they employ photography, moving image, sound, installation, and publication to investigate how identity is constructed through ritual, labor, place, memory, and interpersonal exchange. Collaboration is central to their methodology, positioning the photographic image not as an objective record but as a site where observation, performance, and lived experience converge. Rather than treating domestic space as subject matter, Bielefeld considers it a framework through which larger cultural questions emerge. Their projects often evolve over months or years, allowing repetition, duration, and sustained engagement to become integral to the work itself. Familiar environments, ordinary gestures, and shared routines are approached as systems of meaning, revealing the ways individuals navigate and define family, faith, belonging, gender, and the social expectations that shape contemporary experience. Bielefeld received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photographic Illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography and Media from the California Institute of the Arts. Their work has been presented nationally at institutions including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Wisconsin Art, International Center of Photography, and de Young Museum. Bielefeld's work is held in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Milwaukee Art Museum, Museum of Wisconsin Art, and Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, among other public and private collections. Additional recognition includes the Mary L. Nohl Fellowship, the Gener8tor Art x Sherman PhoenixGrant, Photolucida Critical Mass Top 50, and residencies at ACRE, Ox-Bow School of Art, and Bourglinster, Luxembourg. Second Ave., Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 Join us this Friday as artist Margaret Lockwood sits down in conversation with Curator Suzanne Rose to trace the quiet, deliberate journey behind Awakening Space—from her early foundation in weaving to more than five decades of painting drawn from memory, landscape, and lived experience. The event is free and open to the public; no registration required. Wine and light bites will be served. Opening Celebration + Meet the Artist Saturday, August 15 | 4 -6 pm Dome House | 5015 S. During his residency, he will continue developing his ongoing project Becoming Post-Tropical in dialogue with the Door Peninsula's landscape. Stop by to meet Juan Carlos, learn about his practice, and hear more about his plans for the residency. Read more here. C U R R E N T L Y I O N I V I E W Lois Bielefeld |12 x 12 Project Through August 31, 2026 Featured in this exhibit is a portion of Bielefeld's ongoing series To Commit to Memory, developed over several years and centered on their parents and the home that has shaped their shared history. It began with a recurring ritual: the artist's mother, an Evangelical Christian, reciting Scripture from memory while holding a plank position. Bielefeld treats the gesture not as anecdote but as a system through which belief is practiced, embodied, and carried forward—tracing how memory lives not only in recollection, but in the body, the home, and the repeated actions of everyday life. Page 13 of 40 Page 13 of 42 Awakening Space Through September 12, 2026 Awakening Spacetraces more than five decades of a practice defined by quiet discipline and a steady pursuit of the sublime. Drawing from memory, landscape, and lived experience, Lockwood's paintings invite viewers into contemplation rather than declaration. Each work begins in a real time and place, then is worked and reworked through many layers until the image can be any time and any place. Her surfaces steadily distill, allowing atmosphere, color relationships, and softened form to emerge as the primary language—unfolding across many phases, each arriving at a universal destination, awakened. On view through September 12, Reid invites us to step into the sublime through an exhibition encompassing pinhole photography, in situ miniature dioramas documented in nature, narratively rich paintings, and metal sculptures that hang, roll, wind, and animate— including works never before seen. We hosted three successful in-person programs: • Book Club: Eleven participants joined us to discuss A Marriage at Sea by Sophie Elmhirst. • Junk Journaling Workshop: Led by Bonnie Gunelius, this hands-on workshop welcomed 14 attendees who learned the art of creating collaged journals. • Dinos and Raptors Program: Open Door Bird Sanctuary delighted an audience of 33 with an engaging and educational presentation on dinosaurs and raptors. In addition to our in-person events, we facilitated eight passive programs, including Middle School Maker Kits, Screen-Free Craft Kits, Fourth of July activities, and Paint Your Baileys Harbor Library by Numbers giveaways. Together, these programs reached 523 participants. Tracy and I have also been working to maximize library space through the creation of a Library of Things wall display. This new arrangement allows larger items to be stored outside of public areas while maintaining a strong and visible presence within the library. During July 2026, the library was open for 16 days and welcomed 2,302 visitors. This represents a decrease from July 2025, when the library was also open 16 days but recorded 3,129 visitors. Page 21 of 40 Page 21 of 42 Director’s Report Page 4 of 12 Egg Harbor- Dixie Jorns July was a very busy month at Egg Harbor. Warm days kept the library full of people enjoying the comfortable Kress setting. We hosted two programs this month in conjunction with the Summer Reading Program (SRP). We had forty-two people join us for the Open-Door Bird Sanctuary event and thirty-five folks for the Peninsula Reptile House presentation. Both events were very well done and fun for all who attended. Reading books and completing activities for books and prizes for the SRP has been a big success here as well. As of the end of July, 183 reading records have been turned in. Our area kids and visitors are doing a great job with summer reading goals. MakerSpace projects this month were mini mosaic magnets. This craft was a good choice for all age groups and was a great make-and-take project. We had over 100 people (lots of families on rainy days!) creating fun magnets for their refrigerators. Our Monthly Craft Kick-off Night that previews the coming month’s craft continues to be popular. We had thirteen people join us to learn about working with polymer clays, which will be featured throughout August. The library has recently set up space and time for people to meet and play Mahjong. This was introduced in July, and the players meet on Tuesdays at 1:00pm. In our first month of this, we averaged around twenty participants per week - with a core group of local ladies and some drop-ins that vary each week. By all accounts, everyone is enjoying this and we plan to keep it going as a year-round event. The Between the Pages Book Club had a great discussion of Dave Barry’s memoir, Class Clown. Sixteen women came to the meeting. In August we will be reading and discussing House of Honor by Margaret Philbrick. Margaret has graciously agreed to join us and talk about her book, and we are all looking forward to that. Music Jam continues to be a big hit as well. Anywhere from 11 to 18 musicians have been dropping in to play. Every week is a little different, but it is always fun for everyone that happens to be here. Page 22 of 40 Page 22 of 42 Director’s Report Page 5 of 12 Ephraim- Suzanne Ihrig The summer reading program continued all month long as six more patrons signed up to join the 22 who signed up in June. In July, we had 46 slips turned in for 46 prizes from the prize cart as well as 5 winners of the Beanstack raffles. Door to Summer Adventures returned in July! This year’s theme was “Unearth a Story in Door County”. Our collaboration with the Sister Bay Historical Society and the Door to Summer Adventures Committee, led by Marla Horwitz, produced four outstanding programs: July 9: “America’s 250th Birthday – Let’s party!” featured Colin Welford, who played patriotic songs and led the kids on sing-alongs, in addition to adding musical punctuation of songs from the musical “Hamilton” to a Story time book on Alexander Hamilton. July 16: “Dinosaurs and Door County Fossils – Let’s dig!” featured Cal Pierson, a former Professor who shared his love and knowledge of Door County fossils with the kids and let them get up to his collection of real fossils. Then the kids went outside and went on their own fossil dig! July 23: “Which Animals Dig Deep to Sleep? Let’s learn about hibernation!” featured Aleda Chambers, Natural Resource Educator at Peninsula State Park. Aleda created a very hands-on discussion about native animals who hibernate, and those who don’t, and showed the kids several items to help identify the animals. Page 23 of 40 Page 23 of 42 Director’s Report Page 6 of 12 July 30: “Gnomes, Cherry Pie, and Door County Treats – Let’s learn and eat!” featured Sally Collins, the author of “Sloane the Gnome Bakes a Cherry Pie.” Sally read her book to the kids and then regaled them with tales about gnomes. The kids also learned how to pit cherries and made a simple cherry compote that they enjoyed. In addition to our special guests, the kids enjoyed Story Time, crafts, coloring pages and free books, and healthy snacks. Fish Creek- Elisha Adelman Like most branches, we’ve had a busy July. We’re getting more folks participating in Summer Reading Program this year, which is great. I’ve been tucking the half sheet about the software update into holds and talking to every person I can explaining the upcoming changes and closures, and they seem to be taking the information well. The YMCA summer camp kids have been coming in every week to check out books. Lots have been sitting and reading in the kids room even before they check out their books, which is so nice to see. Reptile House was here in the middle of the month, and we had a pretty good turn out. They brought really cool critters. We’ve been receiving free tick collection kits from Marshfield Clinic, and they have been really popular. Through this program, anyone can order a box of collection kits where folks can send in a tick they found in a little baggie, fill out a form providing information about the tick and its location, and send it to Marshfield Clinic for free. We ran out of one box of the kits and are now halfway through the second set of kits. Having Jennifer B. and Nadine G. come in and cover the desk has been an enormous help during these busy summer times. With families checking out lots of books, it’s sometimes hard to keep up on the housekeeping aspects of the branch manager responsibilities, and I’m very grateful for the help. Sister Bay/ Liberty Grove - Christina Johnson July is always a high volume month. Even with being closed two days for the July 4th holiday, we still hosted over 5,000 patrons in house, and provided programs that included: • Two storytimes that combined brought in 42 people, one themed with water and the other a dinosaur theme, both geared toward ages 4-10 • A well-attended, wonderfully inspiring and great learning experience for writers and readers through a Mystery Novel Author Panel in partnership with Write On, Door County and The Door County Published Authors Collective. o Featured: Linda Drews, Maragret Philbrick, and Patrick Baird o Definitely something to do again as a partnership for the Inside the Book series, and would recommend and host each of these authors again as well • Geology of the Niagara Escarpment with Allison Haus where 45 people learned about the history of our local geology • Book Club Discussion of Long Time Gone by Charlie Donlea with 10 book club members in attendance • Wooly Stitches Hand Stitching where community members bring their own hand stitching projects to work on while visiting with other creatives • A wealth of patrons engaging in on-site pop-up monarch education during the second half of July Page 25 of 40 Page 25 of 42 Director’s Report Page 8 of 12 • And our annual hosting of the Birch Creek Jazz Ambassadors performance, always the last Wednesday afternoon of July, and always inspiring and lively, and creating fans of all ages for jazz. Sturgeon Bay Adult Department – Laura Kayacan July 2 Genealogy Club The genealogy meeting began with a discussion of Internet Archive, its purpose, and its many uses. Since it was near the 250 4th of July, we mentioned ancestors who immigrated and became naturalized citizens and where to find naturalization papers. It was noted that many Germans arrived in Wisconsin in 1840. July 7 Multicultural Book Club The book read by the group for July was “The Secret Book Society” by Madeline Martin. The overall feeling was that the book had interesting characters, and the writing was clear and readable. At the end of the meeting the group was given a list of 12 books, and they were asked to vote in 2 weeks on their choice of 6 books. The books with the most votes will be read from September to March 2027, with February being the Door County Reads selection. July 15 Play Reading Club Discussion July Play Club read “Red Herring” by Michael Hollinger. That same evening was a performance of the play at Third Avenue PlayWorks with the Friends of Door County Libraries as the community partner. This means the Friends received a portion of the proceeds from the first performance where the audience can “pay what you will.” The idea is to foster a sense of collaboration with local nonprofit organizations and enrich the arts and culture of Door County. The play was very fast paced and a little confusing to read but became very clear and humorous when acted out on stage. Page 26 of 40 Page 26 of 42 Director’s Report Page 9 of 12 July 23 Woodsy Dude Beeswax Luminaries Woodsy Dude is a retired grade schoolteacher who has started a business of leading events for kids, teens, and adults. The process of this craft was to dip balloons filled with water 8 times into boiling wax. Press flowers were arranged on the wax and then the balloons were dipped once more. After that the water was poured out of the ballon and the top and bottom of the pieces were cleaned and leveled. Woodsy gave everyone an electric tea light for their luminaries. July 30 Birch Creek Jazz Ambassadors The Birch Creek Jazz Ambassadors, young musicians aged 15 to 17 came to the library to introduce themselves, perform, and to answer questions about their experiences playing jazz. The Summer Music Academy at Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Egg Harbor is designed to give the students practice as performing artists. These young people were very talented and gave an amazing performance! Reference questions on houses and property Lately I’ve had several reference questions about land and houses in Sturgeon Bay that happen to have had some of the first cherry orchards in the county. We are lucky to have access to the 1944 Sanborn Maps that give the newer street names and house numbers, along with the old street names and old property numbers. This makes it easy to go to old phone books that give lots of information not found in more modern phone directories. Sturgeon Bay Children’s Department - Beth Lokken July was busy, as usual, with an enthusiastic crowd for the Peninsula Reptile House and a very focused group of adults making the Woodsy Dude's Luminaries. 1914 Sturgeon Bay plat map Page 27 of 40 Page 27 of 42 Director’s Report Page 10 of 12 The biggest project of the summer every year is the Altrusa Back-to- School Fair, which fell on August 1st this year. With the support of the Friends of Door County Libraries and Altrusa of Door County, we buy and distribute over 450 books to children of all ages after they pick up their school supplies. 22 boxes of books were taken to Sturgeon Bay's TJ Walker Middle School Gym on the Friday before the event, where they were displayed on tables arranged by age and type. This setup every year lets us direct kids to the most likely choice for them. We don't choose for the kids; they get to pick for themselves. On the day of the Fair, we talked to each kid, guided them to a likely table, and talked through the choices. Because we have far more books than children (around 2000 books total in the 22 boxes) even the children who come through the line last got plenty of choices. This year's new books had publication dates no older than 2025, so they were really new "hot" titles for the kids to take home for their personal collections. The remaining books at the end were boxed back up and brought back to the Library to seed the next year's choices. The kids had a wonderful time, as did the adults who volunteered to help. Sturgeon Bay Circulation Department – Morgan Mann The month of July is typically our busiest month each year, and this year is no different. Circulation was up 14% from June to July. The circulation department has also been busy planning, creating, and implementing materials for staff to use in preparation for our software upgrades coming mid-August. This includes an update to the catalog, the app, and our ILS software. Lots of things to learn! Because of the update, we are not filling holds during the first few weeks of August, so high holds items have returned, and we’ve created a Lucky Day Extravaganza area consisting of two tables. Patrons have been overjoyed to see the titles that are “waiting several months” for in their holds lists! We are excited to onboard a new Branch Manager and several Circulation Assistants in the coming months. Page 28 of 40 Page 28 of 42 Director’s Report Page 11 of 12 Washington Island- Corinn Sevcik July was the busiest month this year at the Washington Island Library. We had some very well attended programs. On Tuesday, July 7, we hosted Joe Taylor from the Sturgeon Bay Museum for his program: Thar Be Sea Monsters Here! The Fossil Creatures of the Door Peninsula. He gave a very informative and interesting program on fossils and the creatures who roamed Door County during the time of the dinosaurs. After the program, Joe invited attendees to look at the many fossils he brought along including some that are a part of the museum collection. Joe also had fossils that children and adults could look at under the microscope. And, some attendees brought in their own fossils for Joe to identify. Obviously, there is a huge interest in fossils as a total of 88 people attended the event - 50 children and 38 adults. On Thursday, July 16, the Peninsula Reptile House visited Washington Island for the first time. Due to the poor air quality from the wild fires in Minnesota and Canada, we held this program inside. I knew it was going to be a full house, and it was with 85 in attendance - 52 children and 33 adults. Wes Wrobel from the Peninsula Reptile House did an amazing job navigating through the large crowd, while educating the audience on each of the seven reptiles he brought. In several instances, attendees were allowed to touch and hold the reptiles. The monthly Adult Book Club held on Thursday, July 23, had a decent attendance with seven attendees. We discussed "Plum Island" by Nelson DeMille. Most attendees found the main character, John Corey, to be an unlikeable character, which led to a lively discussion. Page 29 of 40 Page 29 of 42 Director’s Report Page 12 of 12 We had great daily attendance numbers with a door count for the month of July at 2,191. Compared to 2025 at 1,953, that is up 238 patrons! Review and Consider for Approval Moving the Circulation Assistant Position into the Compensation Structure. Unbenefited Circulation Assistants were removed from the compensation structure in 2023. In review of the positions with Rethinking Libraries, the duties are the same between the Circulation Assistant 1 and Circulation Assistant 2, which is a benefited position. The Circulation Assistant position will stay under 24 hours and therefore no benefits. Circulation Assistants who currently have benefits and hours that exceed 24 would retain them. Fiscal impact of this change would be $23,287.00. If approved by the Library Board and the County Board as part of the budget process this proposal would go into effect in 2027. 17 August 2026 – Library Board Meeting Agenda Notes Page 41 of 42 County of Door 2026 for Budget Year 2027 ADDENDUM A Chief Deputy Register of Deeds (Reclassification) 1 Change to Chief Deputy Register of Deeds / Administrative Supervisor. The purpose of this reclassification is to recognize the expanded scope of responsibility and leadership duties assigned to the position within the Register of Deeds Office. In addition to serving as Chief Deputy Register of Deeds, the position has assumed significant administrative, financial, and supervisory responsibilities that extend beyond the traditional duties of the role. The reclassification reflects the increased level of independent judgment, decision- making authority, and accountability required to effectively support the operations and management of the department. Position would be reclassed to Pay Grade G. Jan-27 $104,667.00 $111,643.00 $6,976.00 $6,976.00 Revenue Offset: $0.00 NET IMPACT ON TAX LEVY FOR 2027 $13,646.00 $13,646.00 ADRC ADRC Director (Reclassication) 1 At the end of 2025, Adult Protective Services (APS) was transitioned under the supervision of the ADRC Director. While this change resulted in the addition of three staff members to the position’s supervisory responsibilities, the more significant change is the nature and complexity of the services this role is now responsible for. Position would be reclassed to Pay Grade L. Jan-27 $141,428.00 $148,528.00 $7,100.00 $7,100.00 ADRC Specialist (Reclassication) 3 The ADRC Specialist position is currently classified at Pay Grade F, below both the Disability Benefit Specialist and Elder Benefit Specialist positions, which are classified at Pay Grade G. These positions have comparable educational and experience requirements, with all three requiring a bachelor’s degree and relevant professional experience. The ADRC Specialist position serves as a primary point of entry for individuals seeking long-term care, aging, disability, and community-based resources, which requires knowledge of multiple service systems, programs, and funding sources. As a result, the work is equally, if not more, complex than these comparable positions. Position would be reclassed to Pay Grade G.
