Agriculture: Aerica Bjurstrom, Dairy Educator • Planning with Extension Dairy and Livestock educators to improve producers' understanding and implementation of daily biosecurity protocols within their herds or flocks. Established daily practices help prepare producers for enhanced biosecurity measures that will be implemented during a foreign animal disease response. • A dairy transport and marketing education effort for dairy producers and industry partners, where participants learned how management decisions across an animal’s lifetime and at the time of sale influence welfare, product quality, and transport outcomes, to ensure market cows arrive in optimal condition while supporting farm profitability and maintaining public trust in dairy production. • A farm tour at Kinnard Farms for dairy producers, youth producers, and agriculture professionals, where participants explored large-scale dairy management practices, calf and heifer raising strategies, and innovations in animal care to strengthen decision-making, encourage adoption of best practices, and support the long-term sustainability of the dairy industry. • A dairy producer meeting hosted by Extension for agriculture leaders, where participants explored current industry challenges, shared on-farm strategies, and gained research-based insights to strengthen decision- making, improve herd and business performance, and support a more resilient and thriving dairy industry. • Scissor Clips - I held the annual scissor clip project (mid-May to late May), during which I collected fresh alfalfa samples from 7 fields in Brown, Door, and Kewaunee Counties. The samples were evaluated at the forage lab in De Pere, and results were compiled and shared twice weekly to a mailing list of about 500 recipients. Results were also shared on social media and available on our website. The lab results were also shared on a Wisconsin/Minnesota public-facing website, where producers can access the progress of the first crop. The first crop harvest accounts for about 40% of a field's total yield for a season, so the timing of the first harvest is critical. • Wisconsin Alfalfa Yield Persistence project (WAYP) is a project where I enroll one field at a farm and follow its production and quality for its production life (typically 3-4 years). Samples, harvest information, and yield are collected from each enrolled farm, and this data is aggregated with other farms, and a report is compiled at the end of the growing season. Qualifying farms must have an on- farm scale and be willing to collect samples at each harvest. I currently have two Kewaunee County farms and three Brown County farms in the project. Over the years, about a dozen farms in Brown, Door, and Kewaunee County have participated in the project. • On-farm Evaluation of Nutrient Export from Alfalfa Production – A Survey of Wisconsin Production Fields (Dairy Innovation Hub project) - Eleven fields in Brown, Door, and Kewaunee County are enrolled in this project (7 scissor clips fields and 5 WAYP fields). The summary of the project is to determine nutrient removal from the soil by the alfalfa crop in a season. Soil samples were taken on the fields on May 1, and biomass (weight samples) taken on May 21. Biomass samples will be taken again before the final crop of the season (late August), and soil samples will be taken after the final crop (September). The goal of the project is to determine fertilization recommendations based on the amount of nutrients the alfalfa crop removes from the soil. Page 4 of 13 Door May/June 2026 Report The University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension provides equal opportunities in employment and programming in compliance with state and federal law. Crops and Soils/Nutrient Management: Chris Clark, Outreach Specialist • A series of alfalfa measurements including PEAQ stick measurements, scissor clips, and alfalfa weevil sweeps that will help to better understand optimum alfalfa harvest across Wisconsin. The results of this study will help forage growers to determine what techniques can best predict optimum forage harvest timing to improve first cutting forage quality for livestock. • 2026 DATCP insect trapping survey continues. Chris has 2 trapping sites. Checked every Wednesday the data is shared via an email. UW uses to send out insect pest text alerts to those who sign up for regions of WIS. June 10th was the last Black Cut worm count and the traps were switched to western bean cut worm moths and true army worm counts continue. July will be a big month, for black cut worm hatch, numbers were high but the corn wasn’t planted or emerged yet, so it’s the second hatch which could impact local corn fields. • Badger Crop connect webinar series started in April every other Thursday and provides timely presentations to farmers/agronomist throughout the growing season on weather impacts, insects, disease, crop research/reports from corn, soybean and alfalfa experts, soils, weeds, and nutrient management topics. All are either attended live 12:30-1:30 or you can watch recordings afterwards on YouTube links. • The SnapPlus Version 3 software training webinars continue. Running 11-12:30 with different topics for each webinar. Can again either attend live or check recording after the events. June 2, was the special karst focused training next webinars: June 16, July 21, and Aug 18. Locally we had an in-person training at Kewaunee Co Fairgrounds, June 25th • Chris Clark is working with Aerica to overlap an alfalfa fertilizer recommendation project in same fields she uses for annually scissor clip/WI alfalfa yield and persistence project. 33 alfalfa biomass samples were submitted for a research project to check the nutrient uptake by alfalfa fields to see if any more focused work needs to happened for the state fertilizer recommendations. The collaborating farms for 2026 include: Dairyland Farms- WAYP/DIH, Heims- Scissor clip/DIH, Kinnard- WAYP/DIH, Jeanquart- Scissor clip/DIH, Baudhuin- Scissor clip/DIH, Ebert- WAYP/DIH, Siegmund- Scissor clip/DIH, Mleziva-Scissor clip/DIH, Kane- Scissor clip/DIH, Weise Brothers- WAYP/DIH, and Country Aire-WAYP/Scissor clip/DIH. • Chris presented the UW Extension Manure Project results at the 2026 Dairy Symposium May 12 in Madison. • Planning meetings for the regional nutrient mgmt. meetings (locally held at Fox Valley Tech College Sept 2) First meeting starts Aug 19, details will be shared in July to start registration. • Statewide Extension Visibility: Chris Clark was interviewed by Spectrum news about ag costs this spring https://spectrumnews1.com/wi/milwaukee/news/2026/05/20/wisconsin-farmers-costs-spring- 2026. Chris Clark had a recent article in the Farm Progress Magazine about plant tissue https://www.farmprogress.com/crops/plant-tissue-testing-turns-data-into-decisions. Chris Clark finished a recent article with Dept of Ag Trade and Consumer Protection nutrient mgmt. about manure sampling and research on when is the best time to collect those samples https://cropsandsoils.extension.wisc.edu/articles/when-is-the-best-time-to-sample-manure-research- proven-answers-for-farmers. Health and Well-Being: Laura Apfelbeck/Jace Purdy, Nutrition Coordinators • Engagement with the Brown County Hunger Coalition where coalition members identified collective purchase of produce from local growers as an interest area for future and asked to learn more about how Manitowoc, Kewaunee, and Door Counties had succeeded in doing so. This effort is designed to share knowledge and experience beyond regional borders. • Preparing for collaboration between Extension and UW-Green Bay to support community and increase the effectiveness of direct education and systems change efforts in our region through community nutrition intern. • Planning and preparation for direct education series with youth at Door County Boys and Girls Club. The goal is to get two nutrition education series, with three different groups of kids, to encourage healthy eating and active lifestyles.
