The event will be held on the mezzanine level of the museum in Gallery 3. Please join us to celebrate this up-and-coming contemporary artist and plan to linger afterwards for the reception. The event is free and open to the public. ON VIEW: The exhibition features recent paintings by Wisconsin artist Adam Fulwiler, whose work examines communication, perception, improvisation, and painting's capacity for transformation through abstraction. At the heart of his work is the Page 1 of 3Email from Miller Art Museum 6/10/2026mhtml:file://C:\Users\dfrandrup\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Content.O... Page 9 of 48 relationship with his younger brother, who experiences the world through the heightened perception of autism. Rather than describing that experience directly, Fulwiler translates it through a personal language of color, shape, rhythm, and spatial tension—constructing paintings that honor the extraordinary sensitivity through which his brother perceives life. A road trip the two shared in 2019, during which his brother cataloged the passing landscape with meticulous, equal attention to every object and detail, became a defining moment within the work. Drawing on the influence of Josef Albers's understanding of color as a relational force, Fulwiler's compositions use chromatic interaction, provisional grids, repetition, and spatial fragmentation to create visual systems that shift through sustained looking. Improvisation plays a central role: Fulwiler often employs games, puzzles, and self- imposed rules within the studio, allowing structure and spontaneity to coexist. The resulting paintings move with the cadence of jazz, balancing repetition with interruption and harmony with dissonance. His recent Stack works—shaped in part by playing blocks with his young son—explore gravity, instability, and the emotional tension between balance and collapse. Fragments of painted material are layered, sewn, and reconstructed into surfaces that recall quilting, mapping systems, architecture, and musical notation. Across the exhibition, abstraction becomes a language for navigating sensory experience, memory, and human connection. ABOUT ADAM FULWILER: Adam Fulwiler received his BA in Painting from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay Page 2 of 3Email from Miller Art Museum 6/10/2026mhtml:file://C:\Users\dfrandrup\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Content.O... Page 10 of 48 and his MFA in Painting from the University of Arkansas, where he was awarded the 2022 Windgate Foundation Accelerator Grant. His work has been exhibited nationally and is included in the collections of the Walton Performing Arts Center, Walmart Home Office, and the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. Fulwiler currently serves as Executive Director of the Hardy Gallery in Ephraim, Wisconsin. Page 11 of 48 Evaluating Library Director Performance: A Key Library Board Responsibility Trustee Tale Trustee Tale is a joint project of the Manitowoc-Calumet Library System, Nicolet Federated Library System, Outagamie Waupaca Library System, Winnefox Library System and Wisconsin Valley Library System. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions for future articles, contact your system director. June 2026 By Rebecca Scherer, Director Manitowoc-Calumet Library System One of the most important responsibilities of a library board is hiring a qualified library director. Equally important, however, is the board’s responsibility to evaluate the director’s performance on a regular basis. Although many public libraries receive human resources support from their municipality, the responsibility for conducting the director’s evaluation rests solely with the library board. While the full library board should review and approve the final written evaluation, trustees may choose to delegate the preliminary review process to a standing personnel committee or an ad hoc committee appointed specifically for this purpose. The committee can establish a timeline, assign responsibilities, and determine how feedback will be collected, whether through paper forms, online surveys, or a combination of both. Resources such as the Department of Public Instruction’s Trustee Essentials provide sample performance appraisal forms that can guide the process. Conducting a thorough evaluation of the library director offers significant benefits for both the board and the library. The process provides an opportunity to assess current performance while also helping to establish goals and priorities for future library services and programming. Clearly defined and measurable objectives create benchmarks for future evaluations and can be adjusted over time as the needs of the library and community evolve. Page 12 of 48 Performance evaluations also serve practical administrative purposes. They can help determine appropriate adjustments to the director’s compensation and provide a structured framework for addressing performance concerns. If necessary, the evaluation process may support the development of performance improvement plans or provide documentation related to disciplinary action or termination. Additionally, regular evaluations allow the board to review and update the library director’s job description to reflect changing library practices and community expectations. An effective evaluation process should include several essential components: Director evaluations should be conducted annually; more frequently for new directors. Evaluations should be based on the director’s current job description. A self-evaluation completed by the director can provide valuable insight into library operations, successes, and programming initiatives. Feedback should be gathered from a variety of stakeholders connected to the library’s success, including library trustees, staff members, library system representatives, and directors from fellow member libraries. During the discussion and review of evaluation responses, the board or committee may need to enter into closed session. Under Wisconsin’s Open Meetings Law, State Statute 19.85, closed sessions are permitted for personnel-related matters involving employment, promotion, compensation, or performance evaluations of public employees under the jurisdiction of the library board. Although conducting a director evaluation can be time-consuming and, at times, challenging, the process plays a vital role in strengthening library leadership and planning for the future. A thoughtful and constructive evaluation can provide motivation, support professional growth, and help guide the continued success and direction of the library. Additional Resources More information regarding conducting closed session for evaluation and compensation purposes can be found in Wisconsin Statute § 19.85 at the Wisconsin Legislature website: Wisconsin Legislature: 19.85 More information is also provided in Trustee Essential #6: Evaluating the Director, available through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction website: For Library Trustees | Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction https://owlsweb.org/trustee-tale/ Page 13 of 48 This workshop is ideal for both newly appointed trustees and a great refresher course for those with more experience. Library statistics reporting – included statistical reports and charts: 15 June 2026 – Library Board Meeting Director’s Report – Dominic Frandrup Page 20 of 48 Director’s Report Page 2 of 11 Branch Library Locations Reports Baileys Harbor- Mary Sawyer May was an unusual month for Baileys Harbor. The library was closed for four days that would normally have been open; once for all staff training and three days due to lack of electricity related to geothermal installation in the building. Compared to 2025, we were down 471 visits and only open 13 days instead of 17. We hosted book club where ten people, including the author, discussed “Muddled Cherries” by Sally Collins. We also held a poster-making day for 5-K runners before the big run in Peninsula State Park. Page 21 of 48 Director’s Report Page 3 of 11 Egg Harbor- Dixie Jorns The month of May showed a steady increase in library use. A lot of our summer residents returned, and we also saw a lot of visitors. The weather being less than perfect, many folks found their way to the Kress to spend some time reading the newspapers, working at the puzzle table, and doing remote work. The children’s room typically was busy every day with lots of families making good use of the space. They apparently take pleasure in leaving the two huge bears in fun positions for me to find when I come in mornings. It makes my day and I’m happy to learn that bears enjoy reading! Programming for Egg Harbor has been minimal in May. We had our Movie in the Great Hall on the second Tuesday. There was a nice turnout of 16 people to watch the 2020 version of “The Secret Garden”, which everyone enjoyed. There were also 16 participants for the Between the Pages Book Club where we discussed “This Motherless Land” by Nikki May. This one had mixed reviews, but as always, a good discussion. Silent Book Club of Door County had 9 people attending in May and we have established a core group that is having fun with this format. The Craft Kickoff Night for June was not well attended, but 9 people came for the canvas bag craft that we will be featuring throughout the month of June. We just completed a fused glass votive craft that 33 people participated in over the course of May. Lots of beautiful projects came out of the MakerSpace during the month. The new Public Arts Initiative art show has been installed on the main floor of the Kress. Wood, Wire, and Sound is the title of the collection of instruments that have been handcrafted by local musicians. It is an amazing display that is already bringing people in. In addition to all these activities we have been preparing for Summer Reading Program and steadily working to continue cleaning up the collection in anticipation of the ILS migration. Page 22 of 48 Director’s Report Page 4 of 11 Ephraim- Suzanne Ihrig • 5/5: Ephraim Book Club discussed Mr. Texas by Lawrence Wright • 5/11: After a lot of planning and preparations, the Staff Training Committee presented an all-staff training day at the Kress, giving staff members their first look at our new software, Polaris. • 5/18: Honored to host the May Door County Library Board meeting at the Ephraim Village Hall. • Lots of summer reading program planning! Open Door Bird Sanctuary, Peninsula Reptiles, prize carts, and four Door to Summer Adventures programs coming up over the summer, as well as our big used book sale during Fyr Bal. Fish Creek- Elisha Adelman Definitely getting busier towards the end of the month. We finished up most of the weeding for this time of year and have been repairing items that need attention. The Northern Door Children’s Center finished up their Library special series by visiting here and learning how our library works. They did a scavenger hunt and took goodie bags that include library card sign-up materials (see attached pics). We held a craft night with a few enthusiastic makers. They made junk journals and buttons using our button making contraption that they could take home. Been receiving lots of donations this month, and we’re very grateful for Tech Services hustling and processing the ones added to the collection. We have lots of Page 23 of 48 Director’s Report Page 5 of 11 prizes for SRP ready along with craft kits. We’re also grateful for the new Classics materials that came through using grant funding. Some are already being checked out. Forestville- Jennifer Bacall N/A- Branch Manager position is vacant. Sister Bay/ Liberty Grove - Christina Johnson Of our nine programs for May, the three big ones I would like to feature in sharing here all have a common outdoors theme: World Labyrinth Day We kicked off the month in the library garden on Saturday, May 2 with a celebration of World Labyrinth Day where people all around the world walked labyrinths. For our event, local expert and instructor Beth Coleman facilitated educational learning about labyrinths, guided meditations, a finger labyrinth craft, and spent focused time utilizing our life-sized labyrinth that is in our library garden open for use year-round. Page 24 of 48 Director’s Report Page 6 of 11 Losing the Dark: How do we protect our dark skies? Natural Resources Educator from Newport State Park, local Beth Bartoli, shared about the achievement, background, and maintenance of the International Dark Skies Park designation for Newport, as well as the importance of dark skies for insects, plants, animals, and humans. She also covered examples and recommendations for dark sky friendly lighting, resources, and easy everyday things we can do to help, like: turning off a porch light when not needed, using warm colored lighting, connecting with neighbors, having motion detector lights, and drawing curtains. 28 people gathered Tuesday, May 19 for this evening program and engaged in a great chance to learn together while recognizing and celebrating the wonderful opportunity that we can appreciate in Northern Door and better support from many miles around, as well as anywhere to help. This was a program Beth and I had talked about doing for a few years now, and it was wonderful to have it come to life and see the community interest and great attendance for it. Library Garden Dance Performance: Flamenco To wrap-up the month, we closed it with where we began, another event in the library garden! This time a solo flamenco dance performance featuring staccato footwork, body percussion, and stylized movements choreographed and performed by one of our staff members, local dancer, Willa Wilde. The event was attended by 46 people. The garden was full of joy, learning, happiness, and life. We put chairs and benches in a variety of places throughout with different vantage points of viewing the dance stage and experiencing the garden. Several people even chose to view from sitting in the grass being connected to the earth. Following the performance Willa gave a presentation talking about flamenco in a Q&A format that was very engaging, enriching, and had such a wide variety of questions and interests in conversation with the audience. It was truly such a great community connecting moment and environment that folks stayed to visit with each other well after. Many also shared compliments and their excitement in feedback for having dance and great use of the library garden in local programming with requests for more garden events. Page 25 of 48 Director’s Report Page 7 of 11 Sturgeon Bay Adult Department – Laura Kayacan Tuesday May 5 - Multicultural Book Group This month the group read “Raising Hare” by Chloe Dalton. This book is set in Wales and is a non-fiction memoir about how during covid a political advisor from London moved to a house in Wales where she found a hare and let it in her house, but struggled with her need to keep the animal wild. The book goes into a lot of details on the life of hares, which are different from the rabbits we know. The group loved the book and felt it was a breath of fresh air. Thursday May 7 - Genealogy Club As usual the topic went in many directions, from tracing an orphan sent out West in the 1800’s to databases and information available on the library genealogy/history page. There was discussion of next month’s Door County History Days which will kick off on June 15 at Crossroads this year with a theme of the 250 Anniversary. Monday May 11 - Staff training day Training took place in the Egg Harbor Kress Library. It was very interesting to see and meet so many library staff from all over Door County. Morgan Mann made a very helpful presentation of the basics of the new Polaris ILS (integrated Library System) followed by a little more instruction by Rebecca Buchmann. Everyone received a folder with procedures, and we had a chance to try out the new system in a “Polaris sandbox.” We can continue to practice in the next few months on our own using the sandbox. Thursday May 14 - Staff meeting, Outreach meeting, Programming meeting Our new staff meetings are shorter than in the past and following this whole group meeting I am part of 2 committees, Outreach and Programming. Outreach includes events held by some community organization and programming included events held by the library. Both groups are working out how to communicate better with all branches. May 18 through May 23 - reference question count I oversee data gathering on the number of reference questions asked at each branch for a week, 4 times a year, then averaged for the annual report. Each branch receives a form to fill out with the wording description of reference questions taken directly from the report and I pass the totals to Ashley for when she fills out the report. Page 26 of 48 Director’s Report Page 8 of 11 Wednesday May 27 Play Reading Club Discussion – Moonlight and Magnolias by Ron Hutchinson This play will be opening at Third Avenue PlayWorks in June. It is valuable to get an inside view of the play and to hear Jacob Janssen’s perspective. The play is a comedy and fiction based on a supposed real event involved with the scriptwriting for the movie, “Gone with the Wind.” I brought in a few articles from the local Door County newspapers of the time the movie came out. It was interesting to see it only played in Sturgeon Bay for 3 days, and the paper listed names of people who went down to Green Bay earlier to see it at one of 2 theaters showing the film. Tickets could be bought in Sturgeon Bay at 2 locations, Louis Rockendorf’s Ace Ice Cream Parlor and the Roxana Hotel. The reviews raved about the film, “Nothing like it has ever been attempted since Birth of a Nation…” At the end of this month, I will run Fixity and ResCarta Checksum as part of routine digital preservation procedure learned from a workshop I attended a few years ago in Madison. This is done twice a year, and we follow the 3-2-1 rule, 3 copies, 2 formats and 1 at a distance. Sturgeon Bay Children’s Department - Beth Lokken May was a time of reaching out about the Summer Reading Program. Promotional bookmarks went out to all the schools and daycares, and I had the last visits of the school year with 4k and Kindergarten classes, as well as the annual visit from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders from Sturgeon Bay Schools. By the last week of May we were done and ready to start the Summer Reading Program on June 1st. Our theme title is Unearth a Story, and the focus is on Dinosaurs! This summer we have several organizations coming to multiple branches. Open Door Bird Sanctuary and the Peninsula Reptile House will be making the rounds all over the county, with a theme of how their animals relate to dinosaurs. The Woodsy Dude (from Crivitz) will be coming to several branches to make crafts using beeswax. His programs have limited space, so be sure to reserve your place in advance! Joe Taylor from the Museum will be hosting programs in several places about the fossils of Door County and encourages people to bring their fossils for him to identify. We are encouraging families to "Stump the Expert". Of course there will be programs that are specific to individual branches. In Sturgeon Bay, I will be visiting with Crossroads on Mondays at 2pm to read the new book for their Storywalk. They are being ambitious and will change the story out weekly this summer! I will see the kids at the Boys and Girls Club every Tuesday afternoon, and they will all make trips to the library to choose books every week. I will visit the YMCA Daycamps on alternating weeks all summer, and the Otumba Daycamp will walk to see us and choose books at the start of each of their sessions. I will still be going out to the Doorway to Learning Daycare monthly too. "In House" Storytime starts up again for Father’s Day on Tuesdays at 10:30; we will be outside on the grass any day that the weather cooperates, otherwise we will be in our usual room inside. Lego Builders Club is year around, on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 3:30. In June we will start off our additional programs with Joe Taylor's "There Be Monsters Here" fossils program on Thursday June 25th at 3pm. His program is for all ages. As of this writing, we have been signing families up for the Reading Program for 5 days and school hasn't ended yet. Our regulars are getting signed up, and the big flood of families will happen within the first two weeks. Our first drawings for prizes will happen on Monday June 15th. Page 27 of 48 Director’s Report Page 9 of 11 Let me remind you about how the Reading Program works. We want people to be able to participate easily, so they have choices about how to do it. You can use our app Beanstack to do the whole program entirely from your device, or you can come to any of our 8 libraries and pick up a paper quarter sheet, which can be turned in at any branch. Within each choice you can choose to keep track of how much time you read or are read to or do 4 of 5 suggested activities. Beanstack is county-wide and has prize drawings weekly for either a $5 Destination Door County Gift Certificate, or a brand new book of your choice from our Prize Collections. Each branch has different prizes when you turn in the paper entries; in Sturgeon Bay, you enter a weekly drawing that has the same prizes as Beanstack, in addition, everyone who wins in Sturgeon Bay gets a summer themed bookbag. Many adults think that the Reading Program is just for young children, but it's not! We encourage Teens and Adults to participate too. All your reading counts, in all the forms it takes. Audio Books are one of our favorite ways to read in summer when things get really busy. Reading to children also counts for you and for them. Read with us this summer! Area Manager – Jennifer Bacall • Attended the May 11th Staff Training day for Polaris • Redesigned opening and closing procedures for Circulation Assistants /substitutes at all branch locations • Scheduled visits to all branches • Attended Library Board meeting and NLS Directors meetings • Hosted Branch Managers Meeting Sturgeon Bay Circulation Department – Morgan Mann Heard at the Circ Desk: “Thank you so much! You were SO helpful today!” “Thank you very much. Great library, by the way!” — • — • — • — This year’s Summer Reading Program Theme is “Unearth a Story.” Staff are sporting fossil and dino-inspired tshirts, CSLP (Collaborative Summer Library Program) posters decorate the sides of bookcases and columns, and dinosaurs dangle from the ceiling and around the circulation desk. Also, staff members have offered their personal fossil collections to be in the library’s large display case for the summer. In addition to supporting the summer theme, we have book displays celebrating America 250 with both nonfiction and historical fiction titles available for checkout. And we have a display showcasing audiobooks, wonderbooks and playaways in honor of June being National Audiobook Appreciation Month. Page 28 of 48 Director’s Report Page 10 of 11 Washington Island- Corinn Sevcik The month of May started out with May the 4th, the unofficial Star Wars Day. Washington Island put up a display of all of our Star Wars related books. We had many more in our library than I expected. We also put out Star Wars coloring and activity sheets that were a big hit! Our monthly Storytime & Crafts was held on Tuesday, May 5. We had an amazing turnout with 18 children and 10 adults attending. The theme for May was Mother's Day. Meghann read some books about moms, grandmas, and love. Stephanie took individual pictures of the children holding up a Happy Mother's Day sign with our Polaroid camera. Then, the kids picked out a frame for their Polaroid picture, and decorated a Mother's Day card. On Tuesday, May 12, and Wednesday, May 13, I presented to 22 local high school students on the digital resources offered by just possessing a library card. This was at the request of the High School English teacher. I focused on BadgerLink, which includes Explora, Points of View Reference, Archive of Wisconsin Newspapers, Brittanica School and NoveList. I also went through additional websites and resources like the Small Engine Repair Source, HeritageQuest for genealogy, JobSeeker and the free practice DMV tests. I ended each presentation by having the students download the Libby app onto their phones (if they did not already have it), and log into the app using their library cards. Some of the students seemed excited about the different digital resources offered through our local library. The monthly Adult Book Club held on Thursday, May 28, had a slightly lighter attendance with just six patrons mainly due to off-Island trips and appointments. But, this number included two brand new members to the Book Club. We discussed "Call Your Daughter Home" by Deb Spera, which led to a lively discussion. I began weeding the Mystery section as that is the most popular genre at our library, and we are once again getting short on space. Page 29 of 48 Director’s Report Page 11 of 11 Kindergarten, 1st/2nd grade, and 3rd/4th grade classes continued to visit the library this month, and use the Self- Checkout station. With the school year quickly coming to an end, a few of the classes may not be in again until the fall. I encouraged all students to continue to visit us this summer. Page 30 of 48 8. Acceptance of Gifts, Grants, or Donations The Door County Board of Supervisors have changed their rules regarding gifts, grants and donations to the Door County Library (DCL). It was recognized that the County Board does not have this fiscal oversight and it is the sole responsibility of the Door County Library Board of Trustees. Going forward there is no need for a County resolution to approve Gifts Grants and Donations. All gifts and grants received by DCL will continue to be reported to the Door County Finance Department for accurate accounting as it is DCL’s fiscal agent, and to the County Board of Supervisors for financial transparency. 15 June 2026– Library Board Meeting Agenda Notes Page 42 of 48 Date Department Type rec'd From Description or Purpose Amount or Estimated Value 5/19/2026Library Grant NLS Library Services Grant 3140.00 5/19/2026Library Grant NLS Youth Services Grant 1950.00 Total May 2026 5,090.00$ Acceptance of New Gifts, Grants, or Donations Page 43 of 48 12. Consider and Approve Closing DCL from August 14 - 22 for ILS Migration Door County Library will be undergoing an ILS software update from August 14-22. As a precautionary measure the Library is seeking to potentially be closed during part or all of this time. DCL staff should have more details by the July 10 system consortia meeting, however the actual process itself will determine library operations. Should the Board decide to approve the entire closure, in addition to ILS training and work, DCL staff would have additional training in partnership with County HR, and Rethinking Libraries consultants. 15. Consider and Approve Changing the August 17 Library Board Meeting Date or Location If the Door County Library Board chooses to close during the August 14-22 time period the August 17 th board meeting date and/or time may need to be adjusted. Approval of this agenda item would allow time to plan for this contingency and the alternative would be brought to the board at the July 20, Library Board meeting. 15 June 2026 – Library Board Meeting Agenda Notes Page 47 of 48 16. Review and Approve 2026 Nicolet Improvement and Innovation Grant Participation Door County Library is working with other Nicolet System Libraries to apply for a Nicolet 2026 Nicolet Library Improvement and Innovation Grant. These libraries seek to purchase staff-use tablets and cases for use with Polaris, the new library software, OWLSnet libraries are moving to in August 2026. Certain Polaris tasks are designed to be done using a tablet, the extent of this was not known when the Library finalized its 2026 budget. Due to the collaborative nature of this grant, the grant application has not been finalized, but the Library Board’s approval of the Library’s participation in this project will satisfy the Nicolet Library System’s approval requirement. 15 June 2026 – Library Board Meeting Agenda Notes Page 48 of 48
