Typically made of brass or porcelain, they served as a place to discard saliva and phlegm. By the late 19th century, concerns grew during a global tuberculosis outbreak, as scientists realized spittoons could spread disease—especially when people missed them. Public health efforts followed: spittoons were removed from some public spaces, anti-spitting campaigns emerged, and laws were passed in parts of the U.S. banning spitting. By the mid-20th century, spittoons had largely disappeared from public use.
