B. WATER
1. Operator’s Reports/Maintenance and repair issues
Cerny recapped the Water Consumption report, which showed an increase in water
consumption since last meeting. This was attributed to flushing. Operators continued to
monitor potential leaks and valve turning.
VandenLangenberg added usage was very high during the first ten days of the month,
which can be contributed to the dry weather in early July.
Cerny said the water tower maintenance project is complete.
Cerny updated the Commission to the status of the water meter replacement project.
Three of the 60 meters scheduled for replacement in 2026 remain to be replaced.
a. System Pressure Loss and Advisory Water Boil Notice– Cerny prepared and
recapped his statement regarding the June 24 System Pressure Loss & Advisory
Water Boil Notice: On Wednesday, June 24th a portion of the SMU water system
lost pressure. The pressure loss was due to the valve located in the municipal
metering station closing, and not automatically re-opening when the pressure
began to drop. Staff first became aware of the issue due to resident calls coming
into the Town Hall. When the Operators were notified and checked the pressure
gauge at the pump house the meter indicated that pressure had dropped to 15
lbs. After checking and changing the gauge settings the system electronically
opened the valve and pressure was restored. If the water tower maintenance had
been completed and the tower re-filled this incident would have been a non-
issue.
The SMU’s connection to the Green Bay Water Utility’s pipe is located at a
municipal metering station located at the corner of Bay Settlement Road and Judy
Lane. The SMU’s second connection is located on Van Lanen Road approximately
¼ mile east of Nicolet Drive. The 2
nd connection continued to function properly and
provided pressure to the SMU’s customers “down the hill” from Bay Settlement
Road, so only the residents on the upper portion of the water system were affected
by the loss of pressure.
The DNR mandates that if pressure in a water system falls below 20 lbs. a boil
water notice is required to be issued. Since this was not a water line break and
there was no concern of contaminants having entered the system the DNR
permitted the notice to be “advisory”. The notice was posted on the website,
released to the local media, and affected restaurants were notified directly. After
receiving clean water samples, the DNR allowed the boil notice to be lifted at the
end of day on Thursday, June 25
th.
The Operators continue to work diagnosing the valve failure to determine the
cause and proper remedy.
Herrman requested a communication be added in an upcoming newsletter or utility
bill of how to sign up for notifications on the website.
