Administrative Report for mid-August 2026 to mid-September 2026
General
Facilities
The HVAC project in the lower-level continues. The lower-level is off limits to the public
and staff except for the main entrance, stairs, elevator, and Friends of Monona Library
store. The old equipment in the boiler room has been removed, and the new equipment is
being built in the boiler room. The crew is also ripping out the existing ducts and replacing it
with new ducts. The sounds of the work can be heard at times in the library, and we have
not received any patron complaints. Signage has been up warning patrons of loud noises,
especially when we know there will be work that calls for it (example: sawing concrete).
The date to finish is currently set for mid-late December.
Circulation Supervisor
Director Claringbole announced to library staff that Mathew Howe was offered and
accepted the position of Circulation Supervisor and starts in mid September! Mathew
comes from Beloit Public Library where he worked for many years. We are very excited for
Mathew to begin learning the local policies and procedures at the library, and begin looking
at ways to increase efficiencies in the circulation department!
Capital Budget
Director Claringbole met with Mayor Moore, City Administrator, and City Finance Director
to go over the capital budget projects. DIrector Claringbole discussed the need for the new
service desk, self-check machines, and dedicated sound system in the Forum Room.
Mayor Moore, after hearing all of the City department heads, will then formulate and
complete the Mayor’s Capital Budget and submit it to City Council for discussion and
approval.
ILS
The library is still experiencing some service disruptions with the new ILS and has reported
these to SCLS. The Dane County Library Directors met recently to discuss frustration with
the new ILS, and strategies moving forward. One of the big concerns is the lack of reports
11/18
the library staff have access to, as well as a concern that not all items checked out are
being reported. SCLS has heard these concerns and are looking into the issue.
Personnel Policy
It has been a few years since the library personnel policy has been discussed. Some topics
to discuss and potentially changes are dress code, library closures, and vacation/sick
days, among others.
Friends of Monona Library
The Friends of the Monona Library are adapting to the conditions in the lower-level. The
library has provided some storage space in the book drop room to put book supplies since
it is difficult to get into the back workroom with the construction. The Friends are also
discussing future fundraising plans, as well as re-establishing a fundraising subcommittee.
Challenges continue to be getting involvement from volunteers, as well as finding new
ways to raise money and increase awareness for library programs and services.
Adult Services
August
The Summer Reading Program came to an end mid-August. We had slightly less adults
participate between this year and last year with the numbers being: 373 in 2026 and 406 in
2025. However, the percentage of people that completed the challenge went up by almost
2%. So overall, a great year!
For programs, we had to move off-site due to the HVAC projects, but patrons and
presenters have all found their way over to the Community Center for the Adult programs.
We had a presentation about wills and trusts, Eco-Action had a workshop about home
electrification with MGE, and we had a presentation about the history of Puerto Rico as
part of Beyond the Page's 'Beyond 250' series.
Planning for the rest of the year and beyond is underway. Erin met with the Historic
Blooming Grove Historic Society to start planning for the 2027 Monona History Club series.
12/18
Beyond programming, Erin visited the Senior Center for a presentation on library resources
for people living with low vision and vision loss. She partnered with the Wisconsin Talking
Book and Braille Library to share what state and nationwide resources are available

• Once again, our number of registrants has increased! This was not a goal for the
Summer Reading Program this year, but we continue to expand.
• 2026 Goal: continue to grow completion rate, and by golly, we did it.
• 2027 Goal: work on tween/teen & adult registration, though as you'll see,
completion rates continue to grow for both age groups. And completion is what
matters—ensuring our readers get in some good summer reading to boost those
literacy skills across all ages.
• 2026 Summer Reading Program Stats
• Total Number of Registrants
• 1,621 (2026) | 1,543 (2025) | 1,417 (2024) | 1,140 (2023) | 794 (2022)

• Fall Projects
• Fall/early winter programming is set to go. In the works we have the following
projects:
• Early reader neighborhood project (anticipated completion date in December):
Carolyn, Tiffany, and Rachel (Girl Scout working on Gold Award) will be completing a
13/18
"neighborhooding" project for early readers. This has been in the works for a couple
of years within the team and now it's finally time to begin. Expected outcomes of
this project:
o Cater to new readers: thin spines with tiny titles that new readers may not be
able to read does not cater to the age group it is meant for. Face out,
categorized books in browsing bins will help with browsability.
o Circulation boost: we continue to seek ways to connect community
members to our collections in a more findable way
• Moving Non-fiction picture books that are a better fit/more discoverable in the
picture book section (end of October): Angelika has been going through the entirety
of the Non-fiction collection, pulling books that are a better fit for the picture book
sections.
• Interactive Book Section (hopeful release date: March): another project in the
works planning-wise for a couple of years. Audio books on cd have dwindled in
circulation over the past several years. Our aim is to move the DVD collection to
where the audiobooks currently live, and move Tonies, Yoto, Playaways,
Wonder/Vox Books, Ispy, Shine-a-light over to the current DVD section. We will then
add:
o Push to talk books
o Action-oriented books (Herve Tullet, Don't Push the Button, etc)
o Optical Illusion books
• Elementary-Age Activity Kits (hopeful release date: May 2027): we will continue to
expand our kit offerings so now elementary-aged kids have access to trying new
activities or hobbies and engage in educational activities. Many of these will be
geared towards doing with friends/family (friendship bracelets, games, telescope,
microscope, etc)
