MEMORANDUM
DEPARTMENT - WASTEWATER
Date: October 6, 2026
To: Mayor and Common Council
From: Tim Reel, Wastewater Operations Manager
Re: Presentation of Geographic Information System (GIS) Services Within the City
RELATES TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN
Strategic Goal- Strategic Goal – II. Improve and Maintain our Infrastructure/Facilities
BACKGROUND
The City of Oconomowoc utilizes Geographic Information System (GIS) technology across multiple
departments to organize, manage, analyze, and display information related to City infrastructure,
properties, natural resources, utilities, and other municipal assets. GIS provides a centralized and
efficient means of maintaining information that may otherwise be dispersed among paper records,
databases, spreadsheets, and other sources.
GIS has become an increasingly valuable tool for both day-to-day operations and long-term municipal
planning. City departments utilize GIS for utility infrastructure assessments, property and parcel
information, utility and public works operations, watershed management, development review, asset
management, and field data collection. GIS also provides a means of preserving and organizing
historical City information so it can be accessed alongside current data. This allows staff to better
understand the history of City properties, infrastructure, and other municipal assets without relying solely
on paper records or individual staff knowledge.
The City has worked with GIS consulting services to develop and advance these capabilities to better
meet departmental needs and facilitate the sharing of information across the organization. Continued
development of the City's GIS system provides opportunities to further centralize historical records, field
information, mapping, and other departmental data.
The City's GIS consultant will be in attendance to provide an overview of the City's GIS system and its
application throughout the organization. The presentation will provide Council members with a better
understanding of the role GIS plays in municipal operations, the benefits it provides to City departments,
and its value as a tool for preserving and efficiently managing municipal information.
