New Business
3a. Discussion: Accommodations Tax Research
Duffy researched nearby communities to see how their hotel room tax rates compare to the city’s. He reported
most are at 8 percent. Some are higher but that can also be attributed to different classifications such as resort
communities. It also can be higher based on ratio of shopping, dining and hotels to other businesses in the
community or a convention center being constructed such as the one that Brookfield opened in 2020.
Boldig said she didn’t feel the 8 percent rate impacts people’s decision to stay in Oconomowoc.
Muffler introduced the idea of potentially offering a room tax rate discount to groups like film crews to incentivize
them to stay and film in Oconomowoc.
Rosek said he disagrees with the tax if it’s used to fill up the general reserve funds. He said he supports
discussing using the money in each budget cycle. He said if the money is not spent, it should not be taken.
b. Discussion/Action: Tourism Promotion & Development Initiatives Funding 2023 – 2026
and Budget Amendment up to $120,000
Duffy shared initiatives identified to use budget money toward. He explained projects would be completed over
a span of several years. Of the eight items shared, commission members decided to remove two: large
Adirondack chairs and community information kiosks.
The idea of the community information kiosks was tabled at this time. Commission members had questions
about what type of information would be put on them and what locations they would be located at. The group
agreed using the tourism website is the best method at this time.
In addition to ideas listed, Rosek added he would like to see lighting identifying the Fowler Lake walking route.
Ninmann said the city needs a welcome center.
Sonsalla made a motion for items not removed from the list; second by Boldig. Motion carried unanimously.
Duffy said he will create a budget amendment to reserve funds to pursue these projects. The budget
amendment will be presented to the Common Council at its July 18 meeting.
4. Ideas/Comments from Tourism Members
In response to the initiatives shared, Rosek commented he thinks the large chairs are tacky and a waste of
money. Knight questioned who would maintain the chairs and if money would be set aside to refurbish them.
Ninmann said she felt the chairs worked in a specific location such as the beach.

MEMORANDUM
TOURISM & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Date: May 12, 2026
To: Tourism Commission
From: Bob Duffy, Economic Development & Tourism Director
Paige Brunclik, Marketing and communications Specialist
Re: Proposed Mural for Fiesta Cancun
RELATES TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN
Strategic Goal- Create Tourism Destination Initiatives
BACKGROUND
As a result of a fire, it was necessary to rebuild Fiesta Cancun. The Architectural Commission approved windows
on an alley wall; however, the applicant requested a modification due to the cost.
As established during a September 4, 2024, Architectural Commission meeting, an after-the-fact approval for the
building updates was granted on the condition that two murals be installed on the east wall (alleyway) to address
the uninstalled windows.
To ensure the final completion deadline of September 4, 2026 is met, it is necessary to begin the review process.
Please keep the following guidelines in mind for your submission:
• Approval Body: Murals are classified as art, not signage, per City Code 17.610(1). Therefore, the designs
must be reviewed and approved by the Tourism Commission.
• Collaboration: City staff is available to facilitate with you to ensure the designs meet municipal standards
and follow the approval process.
Attached are the proposed mural concepts provided for the Tourism Commission agenda. It is our hope this will
allow ample time for any necessary revisions and the physical installation before the September 2026 deadline.

Itineraries Pre-packaged trip ideas are a great way to
inspire people to travel to your area. We
brainstormed just the surface of what could
attract folks to Oconomowoc where many
from Minnesota to Chicago would be inclined
to roam near home… People looking for
great getaways that won’t break the bank and
are in a low key, beautiful setting need to look
no more, we have trip ideas for everyone.
As we continue to embrace and enhance
this marketing strategy we have discussed

lodging accommodations to create incentives
for people to use these packages to create
their trip itinerary.

Influencers / Bloggers These influencers have attained notoriety or
respect by being a voice in their community
– they could be local artists, campaigners,
volunteers, sports coaches, etc. Follower
counts can vary, but in rough numbers, you’ll
usually find them sitting between 800 and
5,000. These people are not professional
influencers, nor are they trying to be. They
are defined by their position or profession in
the community first.
Hyperlocal influencers are a growing subset
of micro-influencers, who have been giving
A-list celebrity influencers a run for their
marketing money in recent years. In fact,
micro-influencers, with their smaller sets
of followers, can generate engagement
rates up to 60 percent higher compared to
higher-profile influencers with much bigger
follower lists.
2026: Shift is from influencers to “content
creators” similar idea. In 2025 VisitOcon
worked with On Milwaukee content creators
and had a huge engagment return. In 2026,
want to continue to explore this as well as a
media FAM tour.
