In the past couple years, multiple state bills have been introduced – e.g. SB 1024, SB 1025, AB 1033 – addressing aspects of wakesurfing. None have become law; all effectively dying in legislative session. In lieu of state regulations, over 50 municipalities in Wisconsin have passed ordinances restricting or even banning wake-enhanced boating. One ordinance passed by the town of Scott in Burnett County, has resulted in a lawsuit (filed in 2025). This case looks to be the first direct legal challenge to local wakesurfing control in Wisconsin and is likely a test case to potentially challenge similar ordinances statewide. The City of Delafield, and particularly the Lake Welfare Committee, has discussed the pros and cons of passing an ordinance restricting wakesurfing. In April of 2024, the Delafield Common Council approved the current guidelines and map, that wakesurfing take place more than 500 feet from shore, piers, lifts, and swimmers, along with a minimum depth of 30 feet or more. Since then, there has been discussion about codifying the guidelines into an ordinance. We would prefer to educate rather than legislate but that will depend on compliance with the recommendations. Please provide feedback to any Lake Welfare Committee member
