County Administrator’s Report
October 2026
Economic Development/Marketing
Mindy Simons, Executive Director of Hayward Lakes Visitors and Convention Bureau
gave a report on the final 2025 tourism numbers. Direct visitor spending in Sawyer
County was $114,000,000, up from $111,000,000 in 2024. The total economic impact
was $155,000,000. The hospitality industry supports 958 local jobs.
Their website saw visits grow 32.2% with engaged sessions growing 34%. The
marketing focus is having an impact.
I attended the Grand Opening Ceremony of the Lumber Exchange on October 3rd.
Finance
The 2027 budget is formally turned over to the County Board at the County Board
meeting/Budget Hearing.
Connections
I attended the Wisconsin Counties Association Annual Conference last month. I had a
couple of conversations with Andy Albarado as well as some other County
Administrators.
I attended some good sessions as well. One County discussed how they set up a local
project fund through a percentage of their sales tax revenue. This is used for
community projects throughout their County. I found it to be an interesting idea. They
also spoke about how they brought a consultant in to train leadership on Emotional
Intelligence. I believe this is as important as technical skills.
It was powerful to hear the testimonies of how it has changed individuals’ way of looking
at things both at work as well as at home. The keys are self-awareness of your own
emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and drivers and using that knowledge to develop self-
regulation to control and redirect impulses with a final result of increased empathy
towards others and improved relationships.
Public Safety Radio Network
Not much for updates here. The Draper tower is nearly completed, and the
Meadowbrook tower is about to begin construction. The goal is still to go live yet in
2026. This upgrade has been many years in the making and it is great to see the light
at the end of the tunnel.
CJCC
Will meet on October 14th. I’ll report on this next month
