Page 25 of 30 Page 26 of 30 V Page 27 of 30 Sawyer County Ambulance has continued to invest in the future of EMS within our community through the sponsorship and support of EMR classes at Hayward High School and Lac Courte Oreilles College. In addition, we have sponsored EMT students attending EMT courses through Lac Courte Oreilles College and Northwood Technical College utilizing grant funding that was secured for workforce development. This program originally began during a period when our service was experiencing staffing shortages, with the goal of building interest in EMS locally and developing providers from within our own communities. Overall, this effort has been a success. We have helped build students from the ground level into active EMS providers while also assisting local fire departments in strengthening their EMR staffing base. At the same time, Sawyer County Ambulance has benefited from motivated local providers who continue to grow within the EMS profession. While this project started prior to my time as Director, I have dedicated a significant amount of time and effort, along with many other Sawyer County EMS staff members, toward outreach, teaching, mentoring, and supporting these programs. Although the grant funding that supported much of this initiative has now expired, I remain committed to supporting EMS education and any efforts that strengthen First Responder services throughout Sawyer County. In addition to operational and educational improvements, I have also taken the advice of the County Administrator regarding leadership development and employee support. Both members of my staff and I have been utilizing the REALiving leadership, coaching, and counseling programs and classes. I have personally found these resources to be a significant benefit to the department. This has included one-on-one coaching and counseling sessions, along with group classes and staff sessions focused on communication, leadership, teamwork, and overall department culture. I believe these efforts have had a positive impact on the department as a whole and have helped strengthen both staff relationships and workplace morale. Through continued meetings and collaboration with regional hospitals, it has become clear that Sawyer County Ambulance has significantly improved the recognition of stroke patients in the field. Early recognition and rapid notification to receiving facilities have helped decrease the time from symptom onset to definitive treatment, ultimately improving patient outcomes. This success is a direct reflection of the work being done by all levels of our staff, from EMT Basics through our Paramedics, who continue to make strong on-scene decisions, rapidly identify critical patients, and provide early hospital alerts that allow facilities to prepare before the patient arrives. I also recently met with Richard Mullvain, STEMI Program Manager and Chest Pain Center Coordinator for Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Duluth. During our discussion, he expressed that he was very impressed with the level of care being provided by Sawyer County Ambulance, specifically regarding the rapid recognition and treatment of STEMI patients in the field. A STEMI, or ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction, is one of the most severe types of heart attacks caused by a complete blockage of blood flow to part of the heart and requires immediate intervention in a cardiac catheterization lab to restore circulation and minimize damage to the heart muscle. He stated that for a super rural EMS service like ours to consistently recognize these critical patients quickly, begin treatment early, and transport them to definitive cardiac care is a tremendous benefit to the communities we serve.
