I am making this transition to take a more active role in caring for my two younger grandchildren while their parents advance in their careers. Consequently, my availability no longer aligns with the department's needs, particularly as we approach the upcoming season. Regarding my remaining obligations, I am currently scheduled to work on May 25, 2026. As I have already accepted this shift, I am willing to work that day if my assistance is needed. Please let me know your preference at your earliest convenience, as your decision will guide me on when to return my equipment, key fob, and ID. I truly appreciate the opportunity to have been part of the Lake Geneva Police Department family. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the community and getting to know many of our local business owners. Thank you for your understanding and for the opportunity to serve. Tietz and the officers on duty, On behalf of the residents of the Symphony Bay community, I would like to thank you for your assistance on the morning of Thursday, May 28. Not only were you able to help our car cruise seamlessly make it through the Bloomfield Rd and HWY 120 intersection, but you also helped coordination with the Bloomfield Police Department. While it definitely was nice that our vehicles didn't have to get split up at a traffic signal, it also helped relieve stress for those that were worried about getting lost, and it was a great unexpected surprise for many of the residents and they truly enjoyed the experience. On May 3rd the department participated in the 15th Annual Geneva Lakes Burger Throwdown supporting Badger Prostart culinary arts students. Our Chef’s brought the heat and took home the 1st Place Judges’ Choice and 3rd place People’s Choice! We’re honored to support our community both on and off duty - and we’re already looking forward to next year! On May 2nd, Firefighter/Paramedics Rylee and Abi attended the First Responder Resiliency Conference hosted by Fire Service Women of Illinois. The conference emphasized cancer prevention specific to women in the fire service, along with mental health awareness and overall resiliency. Page 77 of 121 2 Throughout the month, crews at both stations trained on vehicle stabilization, patient extrication, and alternative vehicle fire operations. On May 16th the Department was proud to stand by at today’s Super Hero Shuffle 5k/10k Run/Walk event and support all the amazing walkers and runners participating. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the morning such a success. We love being part of events that bring the community together! Page 78 of 121 3 May 19th, Firefighter/Paramedic Matthew recently attended LifeNet McHenry’s Advanced Airway Course. Great hands-on training that helps us stay prepared. Thank you to LifeNet for hosting the training. The Department kicked off EMS Week the best way we know how — with our 2nd Annual Family Day. Between the pickleball tournament (where some clearly brought their A-game… and others creatively dressed the part), there was no shortage of entertainment. And in case you’ve heard rumors — yes, Chief Peters has been handing out extra hugs this week. Gold Shift fully committed this morning with a group hug around Chief to start their day. All jokes aside, EMS Week is a time to recognize the incredible work our team does every single day. As Chief Peters shared, our personnel consistently demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. Whether responding to emergencies, providing critical care, or supporting families in difficult moments, their impact reaches far beyond the call. Across the communities we serve, we are fortunate to have a team that upholds the highest standards of service. Their hard work, resilience, and commitment make a meaningful difference in the lives of so many each and every day. Here’s just a small glimpse of our department “family,” highlighting the camaraderie and pride that make this team so special. Page 79 of 121 4 On May 21st the Dive Team was able to take full advantage of the weather and water conditions while conducting boat dive training scenarios on the lake. On May 14th, we had a great visit from students at Woods School! They stopped by the station to learn about fire safety, tour the trucks, and see what life at the fire department is all about. Thanks for visiting us! May 21st, we welcomed Noah as our newest Junior Firefighter. He rode in the engine, toured the station, and enjoyed breakfast with the crew. Afterward, he headed to school in style and enjoyed a pizza party for lunch with his classmates. Thanks for spending the morning with us, FF Noah! Page 80 of 121 5 Personnel Spotlight This month we spotlight full time Firefighter/Paramedic Dave Cullen How many years have you been in the fire service? 14 years, 3 months with Lake Geneva What initially drew you to the fire service? It was a lucky windfall, the air force trained me to be a firefighter, and I fell in love and couldn't imagine doing any other job. What is the most rewarding part of your job? One of the most rewarding parts of the job is the camaraderie within the fire service. You build a level of trust and teamwork that’s hard to find anywhere else. Also, it’s an opportunity to be there for people when they need someone most. You may only spend 20 minutes with someone, but how you treat them can stick with them forever What has been your proudest moment or accomplishment since joining the department? The moments I’m proudest of aren’t usually the big flashy calls — it’s when the crew operates smoothly, everyone does their job, and someone gets the help they need because we are ready What is one piece of firefighting equipment or tool you couldn't do without? The apparatus. Walking wouldn't be the fastest way to get there, and hand pumping water doesn’t sound fun. Describe the dynamic and culture of your crew. Gold shift is a lot of fun. Lots of jokes but most importantly the push to be better a little bit every day for the people we serve. The entire dept is filled with awesome people and I’m lucky to be here. What is one essential fire safety or prevention tip you wish every citizen knew? Clean your dryers and dryer vents out! What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining the fire service? Never stop learning, to think how far this career field has come in a short time is crazy be ready to change, learn, and adapt. Oh, and do it! If you weren’t a firefighter, what career path do you think you’d be following? I’d probably still be in the public service…. Dare I say maybe a police officer? Share one fun or surprising fact about yourself that your co-workers might not know. I fall asleep to murder documentaries every night I’m not at the station. That and I love poor quality WW2 movies, the worse the better! Page 81 of 121 6 Personnel Accomplishments Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Kubiak on his recent accomplishments! Lt. Daniel Thomas Derrick Sr., a beloved pillar of the Lake Geneva community and a devoted family man, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026, in his hometown of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Born January 4, 1943, Dan’s life was marked by steadfast dedication to his profession, his community, and above all, his loved ones. A proud lifelong resident of Lake Geneva, Dan embodied the spirit and values of his close-knit community. He graduated from Badger High School in 1961 and soon went on to earn his Funeral Director’s license, embarking on what would become a remarkable 60 -year career in funeral service, licensed by the State of Wisconsin. Working alongside his father, Tom Derrick, Dan helped guide the family tradition at Derrick Funeral Home, a business the Derrick family has honored since 1912. In 2012, his son Ryan joined the family business, continuing this enduring legacy. Dan’s commitment extended beyond his professional life. He spent an impressive 54 years with the Lake Geneva Fire Department, rising through the ranks to become Deputy Chief. Known for wearing his uniform with pride and humility, he never placed his rank a bove others unless necessary, always demonstrating leadership with a guiding and calming presence. His tenure with the Fire Department was one of the longest in its history —a testament to his dedication and the heart he poured into his service. Beyond his career, Dan was one of the founding members of the Lake Geneva Rotary Club and a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus, further illustrating his unwavering commitment to faith and community. Those who knew Dan remember a man whose calming presence could dissolve tension the moment he entered a room. He was quick -witted, warm, and ever ready with a smile and a hug. His personality radiated kindness and strength, and he held a deep affection for his family, his community, and the life he built alongside his beloved wife, Sandy, who preceded him in death. Together, Dan and Sandy shared countless moments filled with joy, notably their spirited dancing to Big Band tunes and the beloved songs of the 1950s and 1960s. Whether on the dance floor or attending 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Francis, where Dan often served as a reader, their companionship was a source of happiness and laughter, especially as his children endeavored to make him smile during mass. Page 88 of 121 Dan did not claim leisure hobbies of his own but was always willing to embrace those chosen by Sandy. Together, they were familiar faces on the Friday Night Bowling League at the Lake Geneva Lanes, a small but cherished part of their shared life. His proudest accomplishments were his impactful careers in both fire and funeral services, the love and life he shared each day with Sandy, and the relationships he nurtured within his family—including his three children, six grandchildren, and four great -grandchildren. Dan’s siblings —Richard (Paula) Derrick and Steve Derrick —along with his extended family, and the entire Lake Geneva Fire Department, remember him with deep respect and affection. Daniel Thomas Derrick Sr. is survived by his children Terra Derrick, Daniel T. Derrick Jr., and Ryan Derrick (Rebecca). He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren Erin, Jake, Grace, Emma, Billy, and Sally, and great -grandchildren Hazel, Ophelia, Gre yson, and Daylee. His siblings Richard (Paula) and Steve Derrick carry forward his memory. Dan was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sandra Lee Derrick ; his parents, Tom and Betty Derrick; and his brother, Jackie. A visitation to honor Dan will be held on June 19, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Derrick Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Lake Geneva. A Mass of Christian burial will follow on June 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church , with burial immediately thereafter at Oak Hill Cemetery. Daniel Thomas Derrick Sr.’s life was a testament to duty, love, and community —values he lived by and imparted to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will endure in the hearts of those he touched, in the generations of his family, and in th e community he so proudly served. In lieu of other forms of expression the family has asked that you make a donation in Dan's name to the Lake Geneva Fire Fighters Association . WHAT EQUIPMENT IS ELIGIBLE or ANY SUGGESTIONS? Within broad guidelines, it is really up to you. Included is a safety equipment list that we believe would be helpful in any municipal workplace.
