The draft request is included in your packet. At this point in time, we do not have wages and benefits
included, which will be provided by the City, and some lines have tentative numbers from Bridges,
including Waukesha County Funding (Line 3720), Services Non-IT (Line 210), and E-media (Line 325).
B. Consider/Act on electing Library Board officers for 2026-2027: President, Vice President, and
Secretary
Per the board’s bylaws, newly elected officers will assume their duties at the conclusion of the June
board meeting. At last month’s meeting, the Board unanimously approved a slate of nominees for the
Board’s consideration: President: Kerry Hansen, Vice President: Melissa Wood, Secretary: Lisa Remm.
C. Sweeney Group presentation on Feasibility Study
Sweeney Group will present results from the Feasibility Study. The report will be provided at the
meeting.
D. Consider/Act on Gift Fund expenditure
The Library print release computer and coin-op (currently out of order) are failing and need to be
replaced. We would like to purchase a new all-in-one computer/paystation from Envisionware along
with the upgrading of our patron printing service to CloudNine printing. This will streamline services for
patrons. The total cost for replacing and upgrading would be $8,927.59.

B. DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Budget/Finance
The budget process this year included a preliminary Committee of the Whole meeting on May 6. Each
department and elected official had time to share what their top priorities are for the coming budget
year.
1. Expand our Digital and Print Collection
Given the rising patron demand for our digital resources, we must reallocate additional funding to this
area. Consequently, we require an expansion of our overall collection budget.
2. Replacing our Public Computers
Public computer access is a vital service for our community, yet our ten current workstations are over a
decade old and struggling to keep pace with demand. Replacing these computers is essential to
6
maintaining the quality of service our patrons rely on and ensuring our library continues to provide
equitable access to technology.
Building/Facilities
We will be getting new railings installed at our front entrance by the end of the year.
Friends of OPL
Friends of OPL have a great swag shop. https://www.bonfire.com/store/your-opl-library-swag-store/
They had a Board of Directors meeting on May 4. Their next meeting is August 3 at 6 pm.
Personnel/Continuing Education
Terri Kroll, one of our reference librarians, is cutting back hours, so we will be posting for a part-time
reference position.
Programming
Tracks in the Stacks Bigfoot Hunt is ready to join your summer fun!
The hunt will run Monday, June 1 – Friday, August 21, 2026.
Like in previous years, the hunt will encourage people to visit member libraries to find the friendly
bigfoots and earn chances to win prizes.
This year’s goal is to add some additional marketing and promotions opportunities with the “Did You
Know” information shared on the Bigfoot posters. We also hope the friendly bigfoots and cute footprint
stamps appeal to our younger fans. By encouraging participants to visit multiple library locations, we aim
to increase awareness of the variety and uniqueness of libraries throughout the system.
Stay tuned – you “Did You Know” bigfoot poster drafts will follow this email for your review!
Key features this year:
• Participants are invited to visit libraries across the system in search of friendly Bigfoots and
collect footprint stamps along the way.
• New this year, participants can also enter to win at each library they visit. That's up to 24 chances
to win.
• Libraries can choose whether to run the event as fully self-service or have staff manage the
stamper and entry forms.
• Maps do not need to be verified this year, since players may enter to win at each library location.
Repeat entries at library locations will be weeded out before the drawing for winners.
• The last day to complete the hunt and submit entry forms is Friday, August 21, 2026.
7
• Member libraries will return all entry forms and boxes to my attention Bridges on Saturday,
August 22, 2026. You may also send back entry forms throughout the summer if you wish.
• Winners will be selected randomly on September 1, 2026, by Bridges Library System staff and
will be notified via email and/or phone.
Lizzie Brazelton has been very busy this month with library visits to the local schools, promoting summer
reading.
Our Summer Reading Program begins on June 8. Board members are invited to participate and can earn
up to two books and two sets of coupons to local businesses.
Our programmers are working hard to finalize summer reading plans, including programs, prizes,
volunteer orientation, and more!
NEW BUSINESS
A. CONSIDER/ACT ON CERTIFYING THE LIBRARY’S COMPLIANCE WITH MINIMUM TO EXEMPT
STANDARDS
The process to exempt City residents from the county library tax each year includes two distinct actions.
The municipality is required to certify the library tax rate. This action takes place in the fall, after the
state releases its official Equalized Assessed Values in mid-August. The library board must also certify the
library’s compliance with various standards.
Ben Nankee moved to approve Certifying the Library’s Compliance with Minimum to Exempt Standards.
Jennifer Aultman Kloth seconded and motion carried.
B. CONSIDER/ACT ON APPROVING CAPITAL BUDGET REQUEST
Capital requests consist of projects exceeding $10,000 scheduled for completion in 2027. I recommend
the Library Board approve a $156,000 capital request for the start-up cost of the Satellite Branch
project. Please note, the plan is this project will be fully funded through donations.
Jennifer Aultman Kloth moved to approve Capital Budget Request with the condition of getting a finacial
update from the mayor and former mayor in the next week. Lisa Remm seconded and motion carried.
C. CONSIDER/ACT ON APPROVING SLATE OF NOMINEES FOR LIBRARY BOARD OFFICERS
The Library Board’s Nominating Committee will present a slate of nominees for your consideration. Per
the Library Board’s bylaws, the election will take place at the board meeting in June.

Bridges Library System Staff Reports
June 2026
Brittany Larson – Library System Director
Meetings and Visits: I was invited to serve in an advisory capacity in the first-round interview panel for
the Watertown Public Library Director. I appreciate being invited to this welcoming group. I had a WPLC
Delivery Workgroup meeting to discuss the final state delivery budget and strategic plans for the future.
I was invited to meet with the staff of the L.D. Fargo Public Library in Lake Mills and appreciated our
time together! I also visited the Karl Junginger Memorial Library and appreciated being given a tour by
the director.
Big Bend Library Director: I would like to welcome Samantha Seagrist as the new Library Director for the
Big Bend Village Library! A New Director Orientation occurred on June 11th to allow Samantha to meet
the Bridges staff and gain an introduction to the overall library system.
Farewell and Appreciation: I would like to take the opportunity to say farewell and honor the service of
three retiring directors from our system. Alli Chase (Alice Baker Memorial Library – Eagle), Peg Checkai
(Watertown Public Library), and Karla Lang (Big Bend Village Library). Thank you for your dedication to
the patrons, the field of librarianship, and to your colleagues in the system!
Database Management Librarian Position: The search remains in progress and I will provide an update
when I am able.
Budget 2027: The budget season has officially commenced. Meetings are being scheduled with
Waukesha and Jefferson County for their respective budget presentations later this summer. I attended
the Waukesha County Budget Kickoff Meeting on June 10th and received training on new software
processes related to the Waukesha County budget submission. I have worked with Bridges staff on their
2027 budget recommendations for their consultant areas and am continuing to refine this overall
budget. Preliminary information on member library charges was presented at the June APL meeting.
APL and the Bridges Board will see a draft of the Bridges 2026 budget in July. With the approval of the
2027-2031 Waukesha Count Library Services Plan we will see the new distribution formula
implemented.
WISEGrant Ordinance: Back in February the Bridges Board approved acceptance of federal grant dollars
(distributed through the DPI’s Bureau of Libraries), related to digital accessibility. In order to document
it with Waukesha County (as our fiscal agent) I needed to write an ordinance to amend the budget. I will
present that to the Waukesha County Finance Committee on June 17th.
Adjacent County Funding: I continue to accept and review adjacent county library funding requests
from libraries across the state, and on behalf of member libraries for our respective system counties.
Requests are due by July 1st but should be submitted before then to give administrative staff from the
receiving counties adequate time to review and enter the requests.
Mobile App RFP Process: Mellanie and I worked on the Mobile App RFP process from March-June 2026.
Along with a committee of member library staff, we engaged in a County RFP process to explore mobile
15
apps as our current vendor contract was ending. The RFP process has concluded and the Bridges Board
will review the contract tonight.
Waukesha County Act 150 Update: I presented to the Waukesha County Executive Committee and
Finance Committee on May 18th and May 20th. On May 26th the plan went before the full Waukesha
Count Library Board and was approved unanimously. It has recently been signed by the County
Executive and is ready for the 2027 budget planning process and implementation in 2027. I would like to
give sincere thanks to all those that served on the committee, including five of our member library
directors (Abby Armour – Mukwonago Community Library, Nan Champe – Pewaukee Public Library,
Bruce Gay – Waukesha Public Library, Stephanie Ramirez – Delafield Public Library, and Cathy Tuttrup –
Brookfield Public Library). I would also like to share appreciation for County Supervisor Timothy
Dondlinger, for chairing the committee.
Mellanie Mercier – Automation Coordinator & Assistant Director
InnovaƟve Users Group: In April I aƩended the InnovaƟve Users group conference in Chicago. In
addiƟon to future funcƟonality sessions, I aƩended sessions on using the weeding workflow for
inventory management, Vega Discover, SimplyReports, Technical Services in Leap and Vega Reports.
Upcoming features include partnership with Amazon for Business to do EDI ordering and grid creaƟon, AI
for creaƟng report scripts, 60 customizable TOMS (type of Material codes) to allow for board books/big
books/tonies etc. to be displayed on their own tab in Vega Discover, bulk change holds, a TOM for 4k blu-
rays, as well as Libby integraƟon in reports.
WILIUG: Last week the Wisconsin Illinois InnovaƟve User Group had their spring meeƟng at the
Milwaukee Public Library. The first day had cataloging sessions on RDA and AI and we offered the ability
to aƩend these sessions to 9 staff from 7 of our member libraries.

Library Visits: In May, I visited the Waukesha Public Library to share what I do and chat with their
management team about potential future continuing education topics.
Community Outreach: I attended the Waukesha County Business Alliance’s “Alliance 101” presentation
and was able to meet with several area businesses, including a financial institutional that provides free
financial literacy classes that can be hosted at our libraries.
SEWI De-Escalation Skills Workshop: Robert Hagen of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI),
Southeast Wisconsin presented to area library staff about recognizing when someone is in crisis and we
can do to de-escalate the person. A strong emphasis was placed on safety, as well as active listening. 28
staff members from across the region attended this event and I received positive feedback on the
speaker and the practical aspects of the workshop.
WI Libraries Buildings & Spaces Webinar: One of the ongoing statewide continuing education projects
educates library staff on library buildings. In May, we hosted “New Libraries, Shared Spaces: Developing
Mixed-Use Library Facilities”, a webinar that shared the building process of two recently opened mixed-
16
u
se facility libraries sharing space with residential units and retail businesses. This was a practical
webinar for any library considering this venture.

Web Accessibility Project
I have been working through the training modules for Allyant/CommonLook PDF to learn how to
properly remediate any pdf files to be fully accessible. There are 11 modules to work through to learn
how to tag properly, set up tables, list and links, and how to build forms. I have also been working with
Midwest Pano to transition the 360 tours into an accessible platform. Training for that will come later
this summer.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT JUNE 2026
BUDGET/FINANCE
The recent rain has caused some leaks in the building. Ken Bingen, the City's new Facilities Manager, is working
on sealing and caulking the affected areas to help prevent further leaking.
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT/REFERENCE
Staff have weeded the Young Adult audiobook collection and relocated the remaining titles next to the Adult
Audiobook collection. This change has created additional space for the growing Library of Things collection.
We hired a new part-time Reference Librarian, Tammy Jacobson. Her start date is June 22.
FRIENDS OF OPL
Reminder: We have ongoing book sale in the library sponsored by the Friends of the Library. The Friends have
funded the purchase of books readers ages 0-18 can earn through the summer reading program.
OPERATIONS
Update on the New Service Desk: Since consolidating our two service points—a circulation desk and a reference
desk—into a single service desk this past January, the transition has gone very well. Staff have adapted to the
new model, and we have received a great deal of positive feedback from both staff and patrons. The new
service desk has improved efficiency while continuing to provide excellent customer service.
PROGRAMMING
20
Lizzie completed nine school visits to promote the Summer Reading Program, generating excitement among
students and recruiting numerous teen volunteers. Our Summer Reading Program is open to all ages and runs
from June 8 through August 8.
The first day of Summer Reading was a tremendous success, with more than 1,000 participants signing up. That
represents 550 more registrations than we had at the end of the first day last year.
We have a monthly booth at the farmers market to promote library services and summer events and have a
craft for kids. We will be there on July 18th and August 22nd.
Jennie Fidler finished up internships with Journey21 and OASD students.
Books & Company hosted Caro Claire Burke, author of NYT Bestseller and GMA Book Club Pick Yesteryear, at
the Library. There were over 100 attendees.
