Town of Rutland Collection Center Meeting Minutes
January 22, 2025 2:00 p.m.
1. Call to Order and roll call. Present were Chairman Norm Arendt, Supervisor Jim Dorn.
2. Also present was Steve Williams
3. Minutes of the September 9, 2024 which were previously informally approved were
approved as submitted.
4. Operation of the Collection Center was discussed. From employee standpoint everything
is working fine. Some residents have raised questions about some of the fees but after an
explanation provided to the residents, they seem satisfied. When pushing brush into the
burn pit some bricks were broken. Replacements were moved from the furniture area
temporarily and in the spring the broken ones will be replaced under the Collection
Center budget line item. Tires if clean are put in the shed at the Collection Center or in
the Quonset hut at the Town Hall. The road crew will dispose of at Dane County when
they have a load. Most tires are found along the roadways in ditches.
5. The final budget figures for 2024 were discussed. This shows that we made a small
profit which includes the salaries of the Collection Center employees. Should still show
a small profit even if the DNR grant is not renewed in the future. The road crew salaries
are not included for the work they do at the Center moving brush, plowing snow and
transporting items to the Dane County landfill or to Kruser’s. We are keeping track of the
large items to see what the financial picture is and that looks like we cover the costs of
disposal from fees received for taking these items in.
6. Discussed the disposal of the small appliances and lawn mowers and other items that
have been brought in that Steve has in the past, disposed of such as lawn mowers and
vacuums. It was decided that residents will need to pay the fee for dropping at the
Collection Center and if Steve wants to he can then strip the items of metal and dispose
the remainder in the trash. However, Steve stated that for these small items it is not
worth the effort. Therefore, the committee decided that no items from the Collection
Center can be taken once the residents pay the fee. If residents wish to drop at Steve’s
house or if Steve desires to pick them up at their homes that is permitted but not putting
these items in Steve’s truck or trailer at the Collection Center.
7. The disposal of material collected along the roads by residents, although appreciated, we
can not verify if it really has been discarded along the Town roads. Therefore, no free
dumping items in the trash. If residents notice items along the roadways, they should
contact either of the road crew, Chester Ace or Dave Mikkelson
8. A letter went out with taxes stating the Center was open from 4-7pm on Wednesdays
which is not true. The Center is open from 5-7pm on Wednesday evenings November
through March and 3-7pm April through October.
9. Committee meeting adjourned at 2:25 p.m.
10. Next meeting will be at the call of the chair.
Respectfully submitted by Norm Arendt, Committee Chair
