TDC Marketing Grant Funding
Impact (Bong Center):
– Facilities: The TDC grants impact on the Bong
Center has allowed us to better maintain our
facilities, Improve the presentation of our
exhibits and generally make the museum more
attractive to visitors. It has allowed us to install
better lighting, more up to date signage, improve
visitor flow and increase accessibility. All have
which has helped improve the Visitor
Experience.
– Events and Special Programming: Tourism-
grant funds support our annual events such as
our “Escape the Bong – Escape Room” Event
and have made it possible for us to produce new
fundraising events like our “Mystery Dinner
Theater”. The grant has allowed us to pursue
events and programming intended to draw
visitors from beyond the local area. These
events and initiatives like our “Mission Marge”
project, have the added benefit of drawing in
overnight or out of town visitors.
-Marketing: The Tourism Development Commission’s marketing grant has played a
significant role in expanding the Bong Center’s visibility and strengthening our
outreach efforts over the past three years. Funding has allowed us to elevate the
professionalism, reach, and consistency of our marketing in several ways.
*The funding allows us to more effectively use our building in the marketing plan.
*We have used the funds on more visible interior and exterior marketing.
* We have increased digital and social media marketing.
*The grant has supported improvements and upgrades in brand materials and our
visual identity with professionally designed brochures, logos, graphics and
promotional materials.
*We have improved website visibility and e-store sales.
*Expanded the tourism center outreach. With new brochures and rack cards we were
able to distribute them to regional hotels, travel entities and tour groups establishing
the groundwork for stronger connections.
*We have updated our promotional materials for our education and outreach programs
as well as our facility rental, and tour group programs.

Exterior Improvements
Visitor Data
Visitor Metrics:
• Total annual visitors:
Just under 24,000 total visitors to the Center in 2024 with 10,757 paying
customers. We are on pace to match those numbers this year, possibly
exceeding them. Of the above total, 2576 were Tourist Information Center
visits. We currently sit at 2210 visits this year with two months remaining.
• Out-of-region visitors:
A safe estimate of our total visitors to the Bong Center would be about 60%
come from out of the region.
• Group tours:
In 2024 we hosted 41 school field trip groups totaling 2195 students and 11
bus tours/Travel groups/Community groups that totaled 571 guests. We are
very close to those numbers this year and will most likely exceed them with
four large school groups coming in December.

Marketing Reach
Marketing Impact:
• Marketing grant funds have allowed us to place print ads in regional magazines and travel guides
such as Lake Superior Magazine, Circle Lake Superior and Circle Wisconsin. Extending our reach
considerably.
• The grant has also allowed us to become more efficient with our digital advertising allowing us to
improve our digital emails and produce a digital downloadable newsletter.
• We have used the funds to improve our website and better manage our SEO. We can now post
blogs and rotating stories and link our e-store to our point of sale.
• Funds from the grant have allowed us to do more social media advertising which has led to a 16%
increase in our followers from the previous year and from January 1st, 2025, to December 1st,
2025, we have had 548,413 views.
• Over the course of the current three-year agreement, we have been able to use marketing grant
funds to advertise on area digital kiosks
• We have also dramatically improved our on-site marketing and printed marketing for outreach
events.
Financial Efficiency
• Operational Efficiency:
We operate a full museum, gift shop, tourist information center, archives
and a very full event calendar with a regular staff of 7 and an operational
budget of $580,900.00 for the museum and $92,210 for the Tourist
Information Center. Every dollar is stretched across frontline operations,
collections care, programming and visitor services.
• Leveraged Funds:
The Bong Center consistently leverages public investment to generate
significantly greater impact for the community. Funding from the City and
the Tourism Development Commission serves as essential seed support that
allows us to attract additional grants, sponsorships, donor contributions,
volunteer labor, and in-kind services. As a result, every dollar invested in the
Center is multiplied through external resources that strengthen our exhibits,
expand our programming, and increase tourism activity in Superior.
Improvements Needed
• Areas for Growth
• Broaden Our Tourism Marketing Reach
We can grow our visibility by targeting regional travelers, school groups, and
veterans’ organizations with more strategic digital marketing, partnerships with
tourism bureaus, and refreshed promotional materials. We are currently
conducting surveys using grant funding to study the local community and the
region as to what their thoughts are on the museum and what would bring them
into the center. I see great potential in growing the interest in the STIC by
enhancing our identity through branding, digital marketing and promotional
materials.
• Increase Community Programming and Seasonal Events
Adding more recurring programs—family days, special tours, living-history events,
summer activities—will increase local engagement and repeat visitation while also
boosting tourism during shoulder seasons.
• Grow and Diversify Revenue Streams
Improved gift shop offerings, expanded group tours, rental opportunities,
sponsorships, and enhanced membership benefits will increase financial resilience
and reduce reliance on any single funding source.
• Build Deeper Partnerships With Schools, Veteran Groups, and Regional
Organizations
Stronger partnerships create more shared events, traveling exhibits, and
educational collaborations—amplifying our reach without major cost increases.
Funding Request Marketing and STIC Grants
Current funding:
• STIC Grant:
– $94,435.00
• Marketing Grant :
– $150,000.00
Contract Renewal Request:
– STIC Grant Request: 94,435 x 7%
• 2026: $101,045.00
• 2027: $108,119.00
• 2028: $115,687.00
• Total over 3 years $324,900 / 3 = $108,300.00
– Marketing Grant Request: 150,000 x 7%
• 2026: $160,500.00
• 2027: $171,734.00
• 2028: $183,754.00
• Total over three years $516,000 / 3 = $172,000.00
• Payroll has increased between 4 and 5% each year. With wages rising across
the industry, we have had to increase our wages to retain and compete for
staff.
• The Consumer Price Index has risen by 3% each of the last three years.
Because the Center runs a lean, efficient budget with no excess capacity, even
small inflationary increases directly impact our ability to maintain current
service levels.
• Insurance costs have gone up substantially with health insurance going up an
average of ten percent a year hiking premiums by 30% since our last
agreement.
• Utilities are averaging about a 15% increase each year as well.
• Those are the main factors but the cost of doing almost everything we do has
gone up considerably.
Need for Increase
Capital Fund Request
We would like to continue the current Capital Improvement agreement as it
structured. Our request is for a 40/60 split up to a total of $250,0000 As we
anticipate several needs in the very near future such as:
• - Air Exchanger replacement and other repairs to our building as is continues
to age. The entry doors will need to be upgraded very soon as well.
• - HVAC System Modification and boiler replacement.
• - Repairs to exterior exhibit
• - Technology upgrades are a constant need.
• - Continued exterior/identity upgrades
• *Over the course of the current agreement, we had anticipated drawing significantly from
the Capital Fund for two major projects: repaving our parking lot and installing a new
highway sign. After obtaining bids, the Mayor identified an alternative funding avenue for
the parking lot project, and the Commission ultimately approved funding for our highway
sign. Because these two large needs were met through other sources, our reliance on the
Capital Agreement Fund over the past three years was far lower than originally projected.
Had those alternative funding options not been available, we would have required a
substantially greater portion of the Capital Fund.
Closing
• Summary:
• - Proven impact
• - Strong ROI for TDC
• - Clear plan for growth
• - Continued partnership

Tourist Information Center Management Proposal
Staffing:
8 hours Per day at $15.00 Per hour = $120
If staffed 5 days per week $31,200 minimum
$120.00 X 358 (days the center will be open per year) = $42,960 minimum $42,960
Benefits: Simple Ira $1,289, Health insurance costs could be as high as $6,000 $7,289
FICA etc. (.0765 x 42,960) $3,286
Management, scheduling, staffing etc… $5,000
*Estimation: My estimate would be anywhere from $40,000 to $55,000
depending on how the center is staffed, whether it is staffed with a full-time
employee or two part-time employees. I feel it would take a full year of
managing the center to truly figure costs and the best method of staffing.
Total: $58,535
Operational Costs:
Brochure purchases, Shipping costs, Postage estimate $25,000
Recycling and removal of dated materials estimate $2,000
Phone line and installation/Free wi-fi $300
Wiring for work stations or second POS station $700
Laptop or desktop Computer $1,600
Printer/Copier $800
Misc. office supplies $500
Fixtures $5,000
Total: $35,900
Proposal Grand Total: $94,435
DocuSign Envelope ID: 27B69BF1-89BE-43D3-866C-476228F32AD3
*Other possible expenses: Upgrade of electronic signage in front of building? Marketing?
There may be other costs that are not considered in this proposal and without out a full year of
managing the tourist information center would we be able to get an accurate accounting. If we
are able to reduce the days in which it the tourist information is staffed or if we are able to
train members of our volunteer staff to man the tourist information desk, the request for
staffing dollars would decrease. They may also be unexpected expenses that arise as well.
