PORTAGE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY (PCPL) BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Alexander Johnson
Director, Portage County Public Library
Director’s Report – September 11, 2026
The County’s salary study has begun. At the consultants' request, individual staff have
completed position description questionnaires (PDQs), in order to account for any changes in
duties since the last update of job descriptions, and to more generally inform the consultants’
work. This should enable a more apples-to-apples comparison with compensation at other
organizations where staff might perform similar duties. The PDQs will then be reviewed by
management, who can add comments for context as necessary before submitting them to the
consultants. This portion will be complete by the end of the month, with the consultants'
analysis and recommendation to follow.
The Stevens Point Downtown Business Improvement District's project to remodel the tunnel
on the eastern edge of the Library's leased area has continued. Demolition of the small,
easternmost portion of the brick wall separating the Main Street sidewalk from the north
entrance to the tunnel is complete, with concrete replacement work to follow. The BID Board
has deferred action on the installation of chimes north of the tunnel, pending further
conversation.
On 8/20/26, I met with SCLS Director Shannon Schultz to discuss the shortcomings of the
current ILS, and how technology services from the consortium might be improved. I
discussed this with SCLS Board President Nancy Foth on 9/8/26 as well.
There is ongoing conversation regarding how to manage the distribution of high-demand
physical materials throughout the member libraries of SCLS, and how to balance wait times,
the value of browsing collections, the interest of the owning library, and transit costs. Similarly,
PCPL will (with the assistance of the Andrew Carnegie Foundation) shortly resume studying
the impact of different methods of managing high demand in electronic materials.
The City of Stevens Point has received several proposals for architectural services to assess
the full scope of our building maintenance needs there. Evaluation of the proposals is
underway. Additionally, I met with Chris Klesmith on 9/10/26 to discuss the Library’s place in
the City’s larger downtown planning projects.
Following successful vendor negotiations, we have added wireless printing services to our
Rosholt and Almond locations at no additional cost to the Library.
Library staff attended the UWSP Fall Engagement Fair on 9/1/26, as part of our ongoing
effort to conduct outreach wherever people gather. More specifically, we have identified the
University as an efficient opportunity for increasing the service we provide, since it brings a
large number of potential new patrons in close proximity to our existing services each year.
