PORTAGE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY (PCPL) BOARD OF TRUSTEES
MEETING AGENDA
Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at 4:30PM
Almond Branch Library, 120 Main Street, Almond, WI 54909

Alexander Johnson
Director, Portage County Public Library
Director’s Report – August 12, 2026
Introductory meetings regarding the County's salary study have begun. Staff across all
County departments will be working with McGrath Human Resources Group to clarify the
scope of each position's duties, with recommendations on any compensation changes to
follow at a later date. Given the scope of the review, this may take several months and will
likely not be ready by the time the 2027 budget is set.
To facilitate unity across teams and ensure that we function as one library within four
buildings, we are working out a rotation so that staff from each of our locations have more
opportunity to work with each other in person. We expect this to begin in the fall.
After a successful pair of semesters with us, our social work intern James Payne will be
moving on to permanent employment at Portage County Health and Human Services. James
produced resources that will continue to benefit staff and patrons after his departure, and we
thank him for his service.
The Stevens Point Downtown Business Improvement District's project to remodel the tunnel
on the eastern edge of the Library's leased area has continued. Power-washing of the wall is
complete, new painting is in progress, and the BID's Design Work Group is investigating the
possibility of a sculpture for the area just north of the tunnel.
On 7/23/26, SCLS Consulting Services Coordinator Jean Anderson came to Stevens Point
for our annual on-site visit from the consortium, where we discussed the ILS migration.
Additionally, on 7/28/26 I had our quarterly check-in with our neighbor at the Lettie W. Jensen
Library in Amherst, where we discussed building expansion projects, the summer reading
program, and the ILS migration.
The SCLS Governance Review Work Group has polled member library staff regarding the
effectiveness of various committees that we use to coordinate system-wide affairs. While we
are still working through our analysis, trends are emerging that point toward ways that the
member libraries and the System can collaborate more efficiently and effectively. Specific
recommendations will follow once the analysis is complete.
