DRAFT August 17th, 2026 Door County Library Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes Page 2 of 3
Director Frandrup highlighted the following:
o The new library software system went live for staff on August 17th. Staff are busy testing
various components and have the opportunity for additional training while the Library is still
closed to the public. Frandrup thanked Head of Circulation Morgan Mann and Head of
Technical Services Rebecca Buchmann for their hard work throughout the transition.
o The new Forestville Branch Manager has been hired. So far she has had a week of training
and tours with more to come.
o Interviews for the Egg Harbor Circulation Assistant position took place and an offer should
be going out soon. There are still two additional Circulation Assistant positions to be filled.
• There was no School Libraries Report this month.
Vouchers Review and Approval
The Door County Library Board of Trustees is statutorily obligated to review and approve the Library’s
vouchers. Having reviewed this month’s voucher summary, Library Board members agreed to approve all
Library expenditures for July 2026 in the amount of $41,885.50
Motion Norton, second Matson. Motion carried. Treasurer Norton’s signature to be secured per by-law.
Donations Review and Approval
Donation and grant expenses are included in the accounts payable transactions. A summary of July 2026
donations and grant activity was included in the August 17th, 2026 Library Board packet. Any grant funds listed
have already been approved by the Library Board.
Motion Dickson, second Matson to accept Library donations received for July 2026 in the amount of
$16,246.94. Motion carried.
Review and Consider for Approval Proposed 2027 Closed and Closed Early Dates
A list of 2027 closed and close early dates was included in the August 17th, 2026 Library Board packet.
There was a short discussion on the proposed closure for Independence Day and why there are additional
closures for some local festivals but not all.
Motion Matson, second Norton to approve the proposed 2027 closed and closed early dates. Motion
Carried.
Review and Consider for Approval Moving the Circulation Assistant Position into the
Compensation Structure
Director Frandrup provided the Library Board with information on the basis for the change: ReThinking
Libraries proposed that the Circulation Assistant 1 and Circulation Assistant 2 positions be combined into
one Circulation Assistant position. Historically, the only difference was a few higher-level tasks. If the
positions are combined, staff who currently hold the Circulation Assistant 1 position would require
additional training but would then be able to work at any location. Moving the position into the
compensation structure would mean that scheduled hours would stay under 24 and there would be no
benefits. Staff who currently hold the Circulation Assistant 2 position would continue to work the same
hours and retain benefits. The consolidation of the positions would come with a higher pay rate and more
responsibility. If approved, the change would go into effect in January 2027.
Several questions were raised by members of the Library Board. How will it be documented so that in the
future when the current Circulation Assistant 2 leaves, the position is not refilled with another Circulation
Assistant 2? The information will be documented in the meeting minutes and with HR to ensure the
position is filled accordingly. It was clarified that no additional staff will be added, but existing staff will be
brought into the compensation structure, which is the cause of the increased fiscal impact. It was added
that the overall fiscal impact does not appear to include the cost savings of not paying benefits and is only
an hourly calculation. Moving the Circulation Assistant position into the compensation structure will make
the pay more competitive even without offering benefits. It was also stated that the County Administrator is
on board with the change. If approved by the Library Board, the change would move onto the County
Board for approval.

Motion Scoville, second Bacon to approve moving the Circulation Assistant position into the compensation
structure. Motion Carried.
Matters to be Placed on a Future Agenda or Referred to a Committee, Official, or Employee
To be discussed at the December 21st, 2026 Library Board Meeting: Historical recap of budget planning
between the Library and Miller Art Museum and what the planning, timeline, and vision for the future
Sturgeon Bay Library renovation looks like.
o What needs to be done next after the Miller Art Museum moves out? A lot of project planning is
needed. The Library space study was competed pre-Covid and needs to be redone.
o County capital is being set aside annually. It is still too early to establish a solid budget but the
project will likely cost more than what the County is setting aside. It is uncertain what the City will
contribute to the project.
o These things all need to be discussed during the Library’s next strategic planning cycle.

Nicolet Library System
Friends and Foundations have distinct roles,
characteristics, and expectations in their
communities. Both types of organizations engage
the community to raise funds and increase
awareness of the library, but they usually differ in
target donor groups, messaging, and/or activities.
To ensure that the Friends or Foundation and the
library have a solid foundation for all future funding
and advocacy initiatives, it is important that the roles
of each organization be clearly defined in a written
agreement at the outset to avoid confusion and
prevent overstepping. Additionally, regular
communication between the library director and the
fundraising groups is vital to ensure that all gifts (of
money, time, or talent) meet the highest needs of the
library.
Furthermore, it is important that financial and
material support be used to enhance or enrich library
services. The availability of support should never be
the occasion for reducing or replacing the
community’s commitment to public funding. Donors
will quit donating and volunteers will quit working if
they see that their efforts are resulting in reduced
public funding for the library instead of improved
service.
Library Friends
Friends organizations are groups of citizens who
join together to support, improve, and promote the
library. Some are formally incorporated, not-for-
profit bodies; some are informal groups of library
supporters. Friends groups are often most visible
through used book sales, ongoing community
donor programs, volunteer coordination, and
financial contributions to the library to support
existing programming and collection activities.
Library Foundations
A library foundation is a separate legal entity
formed for the purpose of raising and managing
private funds in support of enhancing and
Goal!
and expanding library programs and services, facilities, and long-term priorities. A foundation is different
from the Friends’ efforts by involving non-library users as well as library patrons to increase awareness of
library services and resources throughout the entire community. Foundations frequently host major donor
events and coordinate financial campaigns to provide funding for library facilities, major new initiatives, and
special events for the library, outside the scope of a standard library budget.
Additionally, the non-profit status of a foundation provides a platform for raising money and support.
Donors may have a strong belief in the value of the public library yet do not wish to make their
philanthropic gift to a public entity. They will, however, contribute to a non-profit, tax-exempt private
organization: a library foundation. A library foundation provides that win-win situation in which the donor
can receive tax benefits while the library gains support for needed projects.
Relationship Building
While the library board and the Friends or Foundation share a common vision, they are separate,
autonomous bodies—each with a distinct role. The groups work together most effectively if they respect the
distinct role of each organization. Below are a few suggestions that may help create an effective working
relationship:
Friends and Foundations recognize that they do not perform a decision-making role for the library.
The library board values and encourages input and opinions from the Friends and Foundations.
The library board appoints a liaison to the Friends and Foundations, often the library director, to support
regular communication.
Friends and Foundations decide how to spend their funds only after conferring with the library director
and library board.
The Friends and Foundation activities support and align with the library’s mission, strategic plan, and
priorities.
The library board invites and welcomes Friends and Foundation members to library board meetings,
especially when discussing issues that may be of interest to the Friends and/or Foundation.
Key Differences
The primary distinction between a Friends group and a foundation is that a foundation will typically have a
single purpose: to raise private funds for the support of the library, most often support for library building
projects. Friends organizations also often raise money for the library, but may also support the library
through volunteer work in the library and through organized library advocacy work.
A library foundation is usually established with the single purpose of raising significant sums of money for
major activities such as library construction/renovation, other large capital projects, or providing an
endowment for future library needs or enhancements. The activities of foundations, then, are usually
planned toward more long-term financial matters and fund-raising activities and less toward more constant
visible activities such as a Friends group might provide.

Have you ever wondered, "How does my library
compare to others in Wisconsin? How do we know if
our budget, staffing, building size, or program
offerings are in line with other libraries?"
Maybe you're considering a renovation, a whole
new building, a budget revision or wage increase,
or just a change in hours.
Maybe your patrons, other community
organizations, municipal leaders, or donors have
questions about what your library does and how it
is growing.
Maybe after signing off on the annual report,
you're curious about what that data is used for!
Whether you need hard numbers to support your
library's decision-making or you're just curious, there
are multiple resources available, designed for
librarians and trustees at all levels of data literacy. The
Wisconsin Public Library Consortium (WPLC) has
organized the best of these into their Data Use
Toolkit. Start here for a one-stop shop for library data
as well as practical resources to understand, analyze
and apply data effectively.
This newsletter will highlight two tools in the
Toolkit that may be of interest to Wisconsin
trustees; they're also just fun to play around with,
especially if you're a visual person. Once in the
WPLC Toolkit, visit the "Dashboards" link and look
for the WPLC Data Dashboard and South Central
Library System's Fast Facts Dashboard.
The Fast Facts Dashboard from South Central
Library System offers a quicker option for
visualizing library annual report information. In the
Fast Facts Dashboard, you can select a single
library, county, or library system and quickly view a
snapshot of service data across multiple
dimensions, such as library visits, circulation,
program attendance, collection size, and
technology usage. It provides a colorful, visual, at-a-
glance summary for a given year. Your selected
view can be downloaded as an image file or PDF for
inclusion in reports or on a website.
Example of the Fast Facts Dashboard
The WPLC Data Dashboard is the more robust of the two. Based on select data points from all 382 public
library annual reports, the Dashboard can display individual library data, data over time or in a given year,
and peer comparisons and strategies for benchmarking library data. There is a lot of information in the Data
Dashboard and multiple ways to build comparisons, so plan to spend a bit of time familiarizing yourself with
your options for data points and how to identify other libraries in your cohort. There is also a video tutorial
and training toolkit to help get you started.
https://owlsweb.org/trustee-tale/
Example of the Data Dashboard
If you'd like to get a live, real-time overview of these two Dashboards from the data professionals who built
and maintain them, watch "Make Data Work for Your Library: Getting Started with Wisconsin Public
Library Dashboards." This one-hour webinar walks viewers through both Dashboards and shares examples
of how they may be used to answer library board questions, build presentations for the library’s governing
body, and inform strategic planning. Finally, your library system staff are a great resource to help you start
parsing annual report data, decide which data is most relevant to your questions, and interpret
comparisons and outliers.
Data is vital to understanding your library's current services and planning for the future, and the tools and
assistance for using it are at your fingertips. Go out and make data work for your library!

All the Things a Flower Can Become
A Workshop with 2026 Artist in Residence Juan Carlos Rodríguez Rivera
2 -4 pm
What would you do if you were handed the last bouquet of flowers in the world?
That question sits at the heart of this hands-on workshop led by artist Juan Carlos
Rodríguez Rivera, the Miller Art Museum's 2026 Artist in Residence. Each participant
will receive one or two flowers and spend the afternoon exploring, documenting, and
transforming them—observing closely, taking things apart, preserving what can be
preserved, and inventing new forms along the way. There are no right answers here,
just curiosity, experimentation, and an invitation to slow down and notice.
This workshop is part of Rodríguez Rivera's ongoing body of work, Becoming Post-
Tropical, which explores ecological vulnerability, diasporic memory, and material
transformation through natural pigments and organic materials sourced from the Door
Peninsula landscape.

"This workshop is an extension of that thinking—an invitation for our community to slow
down and notice," said Rodríguez Rivera.
What to expect:
l A relaxed, hands-on afternoon exploring pigment, botanicals, and material
transformation
l No experience necessary—just curiosity
l Suitable for all ages
This workshop is free but registration is required. Located at the Dome House, 5015 S.
Cave Point Drive, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235. Important note about parking: Please be
mindful of our neighbors––park on the west side of the road only, and avoid blocking

We continue to make progress on the Founding Industries exhibit. Major components are
mostly complete, and we are now working on graphics and interactive elements. Visitation and
donations were lower than expected, likely due to the exceptionally nice weather. The Educator
Resource Guide was completed and is now being distributed. We also had more than 103
volunteer hours in August, supporting projects including collections organization and inventory,
as well as potential game development.

Branch Library Locations Reports
Baileys Harbor- Mary Sawyer
August was a significant month for the Door County Libraries. With the migration from CARL to Polaris, we
experienced many changes and a higher-than-usual number of unique patron interactions. Baileys Harbor was
one of the libraries that remained open for several days without access to ILS services. During that time, it was
interesting to see how active the library remained despite being unable to check materials in or out or operate as
usual.
Although overall traffic was lighter, dozens of patrons visited during the two days we were open without ILS
access. Many took advantage of the library’s craft activities, printing and faxing services, and meeting space.
In August, we hosted:
Three in-person events:
• Book Club discussion of The Wildes by Louis Bayard
• A family mushroom hike led by a local Baileys Harbor fungi expert
• An author talk with Lynda Sandford about her new book, Disposable Wives
Five passive programs, including:
• A “Make Your Own Mixed Tape” activity utilizing BAI’s Library of Things collection
• Distribution of 134 craft kits to children and families
August also marked the conclusion of our Summer Reading Program. In total, 69 participants of all ages took part,
submitting hundreds of reading slips throughout June, July, and August.
As of today, we are two weeks into “the new system.” While there have been many questions and a few
challenging patron interactions, operations are largely returning to normal. We look forward to seeing what
September brings.

Egg Harbor- Dixie Jorns
August was a busy month at Egg Harbor. Muggy weather made the library a comfortable place to be for families
visiting the area and people doing remote work while on vacation. The children’s room was consistently busy, and
the main space was always in use as well.
Summer Reading Program was a success. Reading slips are still coming in so there is not a final tally, but area kids
really did a great job of reading continuously throughout summer. The Egg Harbor Library had a larger number of
participants – both children and adults – than I have had in the three summers that I have been here.
MakerSpace had polymer clay crafting available to patrons throughout the month. It wasn’t as popular as some
projects that we do here, but a good family-friendly craft. Approximately 40 people participated in the focused
craft. Our kick-off (Monthly Craft Night) for the September craft was very successful. Fifteen people turned out to
work on glass-fused wind chimes. The group turned out beautiful glass pieces, and I get the feeling that September
will be a busy month in MakerSpace.
Fifteen women and one man participated in the Between the Pages Book Club discussion of Margaret Philbrick’s
House of Honor. Margaret joined us for the meeting and did a phenomenal job of talking about her book and the
Page 25 of 84
Director’s Report Page 5 of 12
research, writing, and publishing process. It was really enjoyed by all, and I appreciate her taking the time to be
with us.
As always, Music Jam was well attended during August. An average of about twelve musicians have been coming
on a regular basis and we continue to have folks coming to listen as well. It is always an enjoyable afternoon for
everyone here.
Ephraim- Suzanne Ihrig
Our door count for August 2026 was a total of 1,064 patrons over the 11 days we were open, which is an average of
97 patrons per day. In August 2025, we had 1,866 patrons over 17 days, for an average of 110 per day.
People were coming in once before the migration shutdown to check out a bunch of books and movies to last
during the shutdown, instead of stopping in multiple times over that time frame.
The summer reading program concluded on August 31st. Overall, we 32 patrons sign up to participate, and 87
completed slips handed in for 87 prizes, as well as 13 Beanstack drawing winners. Numbers stayed somewhat flat
over 2025, as the 2025 summer reading program had 34 patrons sign up, 106 completed slips, and 7 Beanstack
winners.
We also kept 47 children reading and learning during the summertime via our Door to Summer Adventures reading
program.
• And, of course, the big news in August was transitioning CarlX Carl Connect software to Polaris Leap. Lots of
little bugs to work through but overall seems to be going well.

Fish Creek- Elisha Adelman
So much happening in August, especially with us being closed for a
week. We had a great magic show with David Watkins, and the YMCA
summer campers showed up with a lot of enthusiasm. They came in a
few more times before the end of the summer, and they’re always big
readers, looking for lots of titles and subjects.
During our closed week, lots got done that’s been hanging out for a
while. I’ve been wanting to utilize the kids’ room better and make more
room for library of things items, including YOTO cards. Was able to
move shelves and items, including being able to move the board books to lower
shelves where they’re more accessible to little ones. There had been old library
posters from the 70s and 80s stored in the back room, and there was space to hang
those up, which kids and adults are loving. There was also room to make displayed
items like new titles and magazines better organized. Patrons have been openly
finding the changes easier to navigate than before, but I’m always open to changing
things if they’ll work better. Stop by and let me know what you think.
There was plenty of tidying in the store room as well since there was space to do
some organizing.
We’re winding down summer reading, and while we didn’t have a lot of participants
in August, overall, the participation was up here from previous years.
Patrons are getting used to the new system, and while it’s always tough to make changes, generally folks have
been good sports about it, and we help whenever we can.
Forestville- Rachel Rabas
August 10th was my first day as the new branch manager at the Forestville Library. I have enjoyed meeting the
Door County Library staff and interacting with many of the families and patrons who regularly visit the Forestville
branch. It was especially fun to see the children excited about turning in their reading slips and picking out their
prizes at the end of the Summer Reading Program on August 21st.
On August 24th, the Forestville Library Book Club met to discuss The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony, at
which four readers attended. Next month’s book club selection is The River is Waiting by Wally Lamb.
Director’s Report Page 7 of 12
Throughout the summer the East Maplewood Homemakers Club hosted a raffle drawing at the branch to promote
Wisconsin dairy. Patrons of all ages could enter their name to win a basket filled with dairy products and other
prizes. The Homemakers Club met at the library on August 28th to draw the names of the winners.
During the month of August, the branch was open for eleven days and welcomed 590 visitors.
Finally, I would like to thank Sue and Melanie for keeping the branch running during the transition between branch
managers and for being so helpful with getting me acquainted with the branch.
Sister Bay/ Liberty Grove - Christina Johnson
August brought the data/technology changes of new software, websites, and apps for our library staff and patrons.
The scheduled closures for the transition, data migration, and trainings occurred in mid-August where we saw a
paired decrease in door counts for the month from being closed those days. Lots of patron compliments loving the
new app especially now.
We had several familiar normal things going on too, like our themed passive coloring pages in the kids area,
monthly craft kits, Book Club, Northern Door Genealogy Society, and Wooly Stitches, which rescheduled to the
following week after the closure. We had a larger than normal attendance of 14 adults joining together for a
morning of stitching, socializing, and a special feature of this August’s gathering: surplus supply swapping.
We brought back two familiar fan favorites from past year’s summer programs as well for August:
• The Peninsula Reptile House (sponsored by the Door County Library Foundation) with 47 patrons attending
including pre-schoolers, elementary agers, teens, and adults.
• And the Door County Alpaca Ranch Tour held off-site at the ranch (funded by Friends of Door County
Libraries) with full to capacity registration and many on the wait list.
o This event brought together all age groups from young grandkids to middle and high schoolers to parents
and grandparents.
o A great event to do as a family with other families, and even just adults on their own with fellow community
members learning together and enjoying being outside.
o We had attendees come from close by, as well as from over an hour drive to attend. One participant who
drove from Southern Door County said she has been keeping an eye out for library events, but this was her first to
attend and it was the ranch tour that got her, as she had been wanting to check them out. She said she is now
more likely to attend other library events because of the great experience with this one and is hopeful for more off-
site opportunities.
Director’s Report Page 8 of 12
o Folks have been eager to know if/when any future tour dates will be offered through the library. With so
much interest and success, we have scheduled to host a Fall opportunity on Wednesday, October 14 for a group
morning tour. To participate, spots must be pre-reserved with confirmation through our branch prior to the event.
Newly offered topics in August included a three-part Tuesday night Travelogue Series held across the month
covering the history and Forts of Mobile Bay.
Also an Upcycled Bookmark Workshop that was supplied partly through items harvested from our free table and
facilitated by Sara McKillop. It was drop in style at the library where 22 patrons across all age categories created
their very own upcycled homemade bookmark. The workshop was sponsored and provided by the Unitarian
Universalist Fellowship of Door County and Environment Committee. Celebrating 30 years and the theme of
Reading to Repair.
Finally, as many may have seen in the recent release of the Pulse, we were featured online (Aug 27) and in print
about the monarch and milkweed educational programming we offer at our location throughout the summers in
July and August. The article itself also brought in interested happy readers of it who are new to our branch to check
us out.
Connected to this, we held a program while we were closed for the technology transition where several families
joined us for Monarch Sing & Sign Storytime in the library garden. It was a lovely time and all were please to have
Debbie Clement return this summer providing a program where kids learn about metamorphosis, monarch
journeys, their story, and sing, dance, and sign along to storytime songs about nature.
Sturgeon Bay Adult Department – Laura Kayacan
Tuesday August 4 – Multicultural Book Group
The book group overall enjoyed reading the book “Life & Death, & Giants” by a Wisconsin author,
Ron Rindo, professor at UW Oshkosh. The setting for the book is Wisconsin, and it involves a
boy from an Amish family who grew to be a giant.
What amazed me about the book was how many copies I saw in the state database, WISCAT and
the fact that most of the copies were checked out. It seems to be a hit in the state.
Thursday August 6 – Genealogy Club
Director’s Report Page 9 of 12
In August I showed the Genealogy Club how much
information I found in the old Sturgeon Bay phone
books and directories. In many cases the streets
are listed with house numbers and when you find
the people living at an address and look them up
under their name, you will see husband and wife, or
often widow and the former husband’s name, plus
occupations. Much more information than in more
modern phone directories. I also explained from
research for reference questions that there were
several large cherry orchards in what is now residential Sturgeon Bay.
Thursday August 6 – Alison Haus - Geology of the Niagara Escarpment with Allison Haus
As part of the summer reading program with the
theme, Unearth a Story, geochemist Allison Haus
spoke about local Wisconsin and Door County
geology and the Niagara Escarpment.
Thursday August 13 – Rethinking Libraries training
Rethinking Libraries had Jami Yazdani cover the following 3 subjects for over an hour each:
• Communication
• Conflict Resolution
• Time Management
Wednesday August 19 – Polaris Leap went live
The new Polaris system is basically easy to use, but a few issues popped up,
and it is helpful to have a good team helping each other at the circulation desk,
along with a few highly trained staff.
An example of a glitch was that we were blocked from checking out materials to
libraries outside our system since they often were blocked and we could not
override blocks. This was corrected in a few days.
Saturday August 29 – Simplifying AI program
Brett Hanson is a former high school teacher who has good knowledge
and certification in AI technology. His presentation was
understandable to most in the audience, and he gave advice on which
AI apps to use and what to avoid.

August held the last two programs of the summer, the Open Door Bird
Sanctuary and Allison Haus taking about the geology of the peninsula. Both
were well attended, mostly by adults. We also finished the last visits out to the
Boys and Girls clubs, the YMCA, and Doorway to Learning.
I then took a rather long vacation to London, which I haven't done for 30 years.
Anyone who wants details can ask and I will talk and show off pictures. I did do
some Library Tourism, visiting the British Library (a non-circulating Research
Library like the Library of Congress) and the Central Library of Bexleyheath
(similar in size to Egg Harbor Library).
September starts the school year and means getting back in touch with organizations that have been closed for
the summer. Many of them prefer to start visits from outside either late in September or the beginning of October
so the kids have a chance to settle in. Sawyer School reached out to me on the first day of school with their
possible dates; I will be seeing 4k and K kids at the end of September!
September also brings one of my favorite (non) Holidays: International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th). It
falls on a Saturday this year, and we will show the classic animated film Treasure Planet and do several pirate
themed crafts, including my Origami Parrots. I am also looking forward to attending the Hispanic Heritage Festival
on September 26th with a display table and some activities that are not nailed down yet. It's always a good time.
Sturgeon Bay Circulation Department – Morgan Mann
In August, the transition to the new ILS software went as smoothly as possible. Additional one-on-one trainings
were facilitated by myself at the Washington Island branch and with the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove branch team
along with Ephraim’s Branch Manager during our transition closure. The most common question for the first few
weeks after the transition was patrons coming in or calling for help with their pin numbers related to their access
to Libby and logging into the new card catalog.
During this time, the circ team also onboarded a new Forestville Branch Manager and a new Circulation Assistant
for Egg Harbor. Tours of the seven mainland branch locations were given to them both during the first week of
September.
The Circ II position will begin training during the month of September, and they will be starting the role at Sturgeon
Bay Library in October due to a retirement.
Checkouts during August were down due to the transition. Holds were frozen at the end of July and were not
fulfilled until we reopened with the new ILS. Also, patrons seemed to take out large stacks of items during the first
full week of August, in preparation for the closure, and had due dates for the end of the month.

Washington Island- Corinn Sevcik
August was a busy month at the Washington Island Library despite being closed for seven days due to the new
software integration.
On Tuesday, August 4, and Thursday, August 6, we held our very
popular annual event - Storytime on the Cherry Train. We started
offering two trains two years ago because they fill up fast. On Tuesday,
we had 18 children and 13 adults ride the Cherry Train around the Island
while listening to former teacher Marleen Johnson read books.
Unfortunately, we had a couple of last minute no-shows on Tuesday
despite sending out text message reminders on Monday. On Thursday,
24 children and 14 adults rode the Cherry Train.
On Tuesday, August 11, despite the library being closed for the software update, we held the Summer Songs &
Stories event. This was a partnership with the Washington Island Music Festival. Maren McNeil with the Music
Festival led families in finger plays, songs, movement and instruments. The attendance included 15 children and
eight adults. This event was geared towards children ages 0-5 and their families. I'm hoping to partner next
summer with the Music Festival to hold a similar event.
On Wednesday, August 19, in partnership with the local Art & Nature
Center, we held a Buzz About Bees Storytime. The event was held at
the Art & Nature Center. Outside on a blanket, I read several books
about bees to the 19 children and ten adults, including several
children from the local daycare. Then, we headed inside the Art &
Nature Center to view the live bee hive, and for Steve Waldron, who is
an Island beekeeper and works at the Nature Center, to teach more
about bees. This event was geared towards ages two to early
elementary.

Director’s Report Page 12 of 12
On Tuesday, August 25, we offered the Beeswax Luminary event put
on by Woodsy Dude. We maxed out attendance at 15, which
included four tweens and teens, and two different families who
traveled from off-Island to attend. All participants truly enjoyed the
event, and several already asked if we could host this event again.
All the luminaries turned out really beautiful. Thank you to the
Library Foundation for providing the funds for us to offer this
amazing event.
The monthly Adult Book Club held on Thursday, August 27, had the lowest turnout in recent months with only five
attendees. The low attendance was due to many regular participants traveling off-Island, and a few had already
read the book. We discussed the non-fiction book "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot.
Because of the book's sensitive themes of racism and medical consent, the discussion was very thought
provoking and serious.

11. Review and Consider for Approval Job Description Revisions.
Over the previous couple years, the County Human Resources department has been working
with all departments to standardize job descriptions in terms of layout and ADA terminology.
Library staff have been involved throughout the process and staff have had several
opportunities to make necessary changes to conform job descriptions to the new standard
layout in terms of duties and terminology. With the Library’s hierarchy revision the reporting
structure has also been updated on the job descriptions.
Since changes to the previous job descriptions were considerable, the final versions are
included in the packet. Original and working versions can be available if desired.
Note – Though the Library Board has approved Circulation Assistant 1 & 2 positions for
consolidation the County Board have not yet decided due to budgetary impact. When the
County Board has decided, the job description(s) will come to the Library Board for approval.
