SLMD Minutes January 17, 2026 SLMD board members Ted Gallagher (Chair), Marilee Pelko (Treasurer), Joshua Daubner (Secretary), Gary Walejko (Town of Marion), and Thomas Mosling (Waushara County) were present, as well as SLMD members Mike Beauchaine, Rob Walejko, and JR Stewert (via Google Meet) were also in attendance. Meeting called to order at 9:10 AM by Ted Gallagher. Minutes from the last board meeting in October were approved as emailed prior to this meeting. Marilee 1st, Ted 2nd, none in opposition. Treasurer’s report: Marilee read the report as presented, with a beginning balance of $4104.51 and an ending balance of $4161.80. Josh 1st, Ted 2nd, motion carried to accept Treasurer’s report into record. JR Stewart had a question regarding the investment we made into 2 CDs. Marilee explained that we had deposited $16,000 last year into 2 CDs. A 7 month, which matures in March, and a 13 month, which matures in September. She also explained when the tax roll monies come in May/June. Old Business: There was some information missing in the budget from last quarter. Marilee filled in the missing data and it will be ready at the April meeting to then be presented at the Annual Membership meeting in May. Goose control - Joshua Daubner read the recent update from SLMD member Bill Hutchison, indicating that land owners had been contacted for permission to treat nests, and that all permits have been submitted. Insurance - Marilee cancelled our workers comp policy but she had not received a refund check as of the time of the meeting. Carp Trap - Ted reviewed how we sprayed the cattails last fall. We will need to wait and see what happens in spring as far as die off and clean up may be concerned. The spoils may have to be hand dug. May need volunteers in Spring. Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) - Ted had contacted Cason and had received 2 quotes, one for treating Curly Leaf Pondweed (CLP) and one for Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM). The quotes were costly and more than we had budgeted for treatment. Cason had the south basin of the lake in the treatment plan and we asked to get a new quote omitting that basin as there is no boat traffic or very little on that part of the lake. If the new quote is still higher than we anticipated, the 7 month CD that matures in March could be used to offset additional costs. (Per Marilee). PFAS Testing - Mike Beauchaine reviewed a quote for $1200 to have the testing done on Spring Lake. Per his presentation at the last annual meeting. Josh Daubner moved that we move forward with the test. Ted G 2nd. Motion passed. Mike noted that we may want to test every 5 years. If so, this will need to be updated in our Lake Management Plan. New Business: Purple Loosestrife - This was brought up by a member and even though it is not technically lake business, we can supply more info in emails and can mention at the annual meeting to educate members on this invasive species. Josh D moved to add to annual meeting agenda and Ted 2nd. Motion passed. Wisconsin Lakes Council meeting - Marilee and Ted both attended this in November. They highlighted that there was good information to be had and to see what other districts are dealing with was interesting. SLMD board members will continue to attend in the future. Facebook and website - Josh D will try and get access to the SLMD Facebook page. If not able, we will have to make a new one. It will be a good place to spread information about SLMD to our membership if maintained. Ted will update Tonia at Marion Town to update the website with Minutes and Agendas for SLMD. Annual meeting date moved to May 30. Marilee suggested more reminders be sent to increase awareness of the meeting for all SLMD members. Open Discussion - Ted brought up WE Energy natural gas for our side of the lake, as some members had asked him about it. Even though not lake business, we can send a WE Energies rep info that there are people interested in natural gas services on the west side of Spring Lake. Gary W reviewed that the West side boat landing will be worked on starting in Spring. The landing will be closed during construction. They are installing concrete pads in the water to help prevent further erosion of the launch. Ted moved to adjourn the meeting at 10:10AM, Marilee 2nd, meeting adjourned.
