Presentation by Dane County Sheriff’s Deputy for proposed enforcement efforts with possible action: Mike Walnoha, Crime Analyst for Dane County Sheriff’s Office, provided a brief overview of the DDACTS (Data-Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety) program. The effort is a proactive approach for addressing ongoing issues rather than a reactive one. The County Sheriff’s office is working in cooperation with the City of Madison Police Department for a program located along the North Fair Oaks/Milwaukee Street corridor. This is a high-visibility effort to target areas with high concentrations of vehicular crashes and crime with an eye towards long term solutions. Sergeant Jason Russell shared maps, statistical information, and pictorial/video imagery to explain how the target area was determined and the observations and actions taken to date. There followed a discussion of strategies to meet goals to reduce speeding, reduce crime, and increase pedestrian and non-motorized vehicle safety. This effort will span the period from May 13, 2026 until November 13, 2026. Resident Barb Hockett asked of those who are stopped to receive a warning or a citation along the corridor, how many reside within the area. Approximately 25% live in the area of the stops. It was noted that these traffic stops are being coded to reflect that they are part of the DDACTS program. Each person stopped receives and informational brochure about the program and the goals of the effort. 3a.
