4. Review 2026 prairie activities: discussion
a. Burn (none)
b. Weed control
i. Going well. Craig Annen says reed canary is being affected. Invasive
cattail all done for the most part. Working on purple loosestrife. David
took care of a bunch of wild parsnip and some trees.
c. Kestrel box
i. Starlings again – evicted 3x. David will remove the box because starlings
won’t leave it alone.
d. Barn swallow netting
i. Looks good, effective, no staples are popping yet. Will inspect again in
spring.
5. Future 2026-2027 activities: discussion/action.
a. Tree planting, landscaping changes
i. Jane wanted to donate a maple seedling from the tree that she gave to Vera
Dahlman (now Renee’s house) as a memory of the Berry Backyard Club.
No seedlings available this year. It’s a red-colored maple when it turns –
Renee will try to identify the type. Will revisit the subject when we have a
tree.
ii. Recommend removing several and replace only 4.
b. Burn
i. David talked to Jim Parry. He doesn’t like to do a fall burn in moist areas
– not effective. Plus, Jim sold all his equipment, so he can help, but not
lead. Could ask the Black Earth Fire Dept, b/c Town hall is in Black Earth
FD district. David will contact Chris Schwoerer. Probably not do in Fall,
only Spring. Sarah will talk to BMAP group.
c. Weed control
i. Don’t need to do anything this fall. We’ll ask Craig and do based on what
he says and budget.
d. Kestrel box – will be removed.
e. Barn swallow netting – check in spring
