. Old Business –
• Affordable Housing Supply
• Guest Houses
It was brought to the attention of the Zoning Committee that with short term rentals (STR) regulations passed
by the state in past 4-5 years, that guesthouses are being rented out. Prior to this regulation, Presque Isle had
stated in their zoning regulations that guest houses were non-rentable. Additionally, prior to the state regula-
tion, short term rentals (STR) were not permissible on the primary residence. Carl called a local municipality and
asked of their policy, and it was explained to him that if the guest house on the property passed regulations of
the STR, it was perfectly acceptable practice. Personal opinions withstanding, numerous members of the P.I.
zoning committee felt that denial of renting out guesthouses was legally in-defensible. It was recommended
that the zoning committee ask the P.I. Town Board if they thought the subject should be investigated more de-
tail by the Zoning Committee.
• Section 902.6 and subsequent sections
• Status of Vilas Co. review/approval on initial P.I. Storage Container regulation & revision of current P.I. Camping
regulation
• Maines for Shallow CSM 22-1611 note 5 addition. Selling restriction was added by Greg Maines. Forest for-
warded it earlier to the Town Board for approval.
• Maple Road/Drive update
As a follow up to last month’s(May) discussion of whether Maple Road is classified as a “road” or “drive”, addi-
tional details about the present “road” maintenance were brought to zoning members attention. If deemed a
“road”, then a potential seller/buyer of a lot would need a variance from the board of adjustment for construc-
tion, whereas if it was deemed a “drive” the setback rules allowed construction. Set back restrictions are differ-
ent on roads vs. drives.
The Zoning Committee came to a consensus that it probably is a “road” designation, however, the town board
ultimately needs to make a determination of “road”/”drive” question.
6. New Business
• 2 lot subdivision Section 27 , T43N, R7E
Jim Rein(Wilderness Survey) representing John MacClean presented preliminary CSM depicting a 2 lot division
of Gov’t. Lot 4 Section 27, T43N,R7E. Jim had previously informally briefed the committee on his ideas how to
split this lot at the March 10, 2026 P.I. zoning meeting. Forest after viewing the preliminary CSM brought it to
the attention of everyone that the access easement depicted, does not meet P.I. access road setback of 15’. The
setback does meet county regulations of 5 feet. The question of whether this detail was discussed at the March
zoning meeting was in dis-agreement with Jim & Forest. Carl motioned that the Zoning Committee recommend
approval of this preliminary CSM to the Town Board with the access road being a known P.I. zoning deficiency;
that the town board could approve or disapprove, and if disapproved, refer it to the P.I. Board of Adjustment.
Additionally, if approved, the CSM division was contingent on the Northwoods Emergency Medical Services
District (NEMSD) purchasing the divided lot. Patrick seconded, MC unanimously.
Next meeting July 14 / 3:00pm
Adjournment 4:12 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Carl Schoenecker / Recording Secretary
