CALL TO ORDER
Supervisor Olson opened up the meeting at 6:30 p.m.
1. Educational Presentation from Clean Lakes Alliance.
Paul Dearlove with Clean Lakes Alliance presented educational information regarding phosphorus
and how it affects waterways. He gave a brief background regarding the watershed surrounding
the lake chain, in which Lake Kegonsa is located at the bottom. Mr. Dearlove stated that
agricultural runoff is the number one issue, but there are other contributing factors such as leaves.
Leaves become a bigger issue in large cities, where streets have storm & gutter. He used the City
of Madison as an example. There are miles and miles of roads with trees in the terrace. When the
leaves fall & it rains, they end up directly into the storm sewers, draining into the lakes. Mr.
Dearlove discussed what surrounding towns, villages, and cities do to keep leaves out of the
lakes. Many larger cities offer leaf collection via vacuum truck. Other options included leaf drop off
sites, yard waste/compost sites, and hiring a contractor, such as Pellitteri Waste Systems to pick
up leaves. A discussion was held and residents asked questions.
2. Presentation on a leaf district and leaf collection for the Town of Pleasant
Springs
Town Board Supervisor Eric Olson presented on the leaf collection for the Town of Pleasant
Springs. He provided a brief background on what the town has done in the past. In 2018 FOLKS
(Friends of Lake Kegonsa) started a leaf pick up program. FOLKS would collect bags of leaves
from residents around the lake. The collection then turned into a joint effort with the Town of Dunn.
Dunn and Pleasant Springs would rent a leaf vacuum truck from the City of Stoughton for two
weekends each in the fall. The city no longer leases the leaf vacuum trucks out and last year, the
Town of Dunn with FOLKS decided to purchase the truck from the city. Supervisor Olson noted
the Town idea is to do something similar to the Town of Dunn for designated areas that have run
off into the lake. A brief discussion was held.
3. Presentation on the Big and Little Green Lakes Association leaf collection
project in Green Lake County.
Supervisor Faith Schuck presented on the Green Lake Association. She gave a brief
background on the Green Lake Association and what their initiatives are to keep the lakes
clean. In 2023, the association started a program called Rake for the Lake, to encourage
residents to rake leaves & keep them out of the lakes. The program is no longer active, as the
association decided to direct their time and efforts to larger issues. The Town of Green Lake
does not provide leaf pick up, but they do offer a yard waste site where residents can drop off
leaves.
This public meeting is for the purpose of educating the public and town board on the effects of leaves
in our waterways, and possible leaf collection for the Town of Pleasant Springs Lake property owners.
There will be no action taken at this meeting.
ADJOURNMENT
Supervisor Olson closed the meeting at 7:45 p.m.
