HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES
Public Works Director Schofield called the Historic Preservation Commission to order on July 13th, 2026
at 5:08 pm in City Hall in Garden Level Room 58.
Members present were Leland Schwebs, Melissa Kneeland, John Sobota, Sylvia Gengenbach, and Carl
Rudenborg. Joshua Kohnke and Tim Dotseth were absent. Also, present were David Schofield, Dave
Kowieski, Christopher Johnson, and John Goetz.
Appointment of Chairperson pro Tempore: Commission Chairperson Joshua Kohnke was absent, as
such a temporary chairperson was needed, for this meeting only.
Motion to appoint Melissa Kneeland as Chairperson pro tempore for this meeting made by Sobota;
Gengenbach 2nd; motion carried unanimously on a voice vote.
Approval of Minutes: Motion to approve the minutes of the June 8, 2026 meeting by Schwebs;
Rudenborg 2nd; motion carried unanimously on a voice vote.
Public Comments: John Goetz, from Lumber Jax spoke on the proposed material for the knee-wall,
having brought a sample of the proposed non-mortar stone façade. Giving a brief description of the
materials, their water resistance, and ease of installation – as the faux stone comes on sheets which are
fastened to the wall with screws into backing board, which overlap each other as the material is built up
the wall.
Question was raised about the repairability of the material, by Rudenborg. Which was stated as
repairable, by Kowiski, but that comes with having to remove of the stacked portion.
Old Business: none.
New Business: a) Certificate of Appropriateness application from Lumberjax Ventures, LLC for Façade
Renovation at LumberJax BakeHouse and Café (230 Main Street East)
The project was summarized as presented in the packet by City Staff; this is the resubmission for only
the previously excluded knee-wall. Concern was raised about the installation and the possibility for open
looking joints in the panels by Schofield. Assurance was given that the contracted builder would take
care in the installation.
Motion to approve the Certificate of Appropriateness application from Lumberjax Ventures, LLC for
Façade Renovation at LumberJax BakeHouse and Café (230 Main Street East), as presented made by
Schwebs; Sabota 2nd; motion carried unanimously on a voice vote.

SH
Historic Preservation Commission,
I am considering purchasing the property located at 424 Main Street in Menomonie. I currently own
and operate a business similar to the one presently located in the building.
Before moving forward with the purchase, I would like to better understand the Historic Preservation
Board's expectations regarding the restoration of the property. The building has fallen into significant
disrepair, and I want to ensure that I will be able to make the repairs necessary to preserve it without
encountering unexpected requirements that could make the project financially unfeasible.
My intent is to restore the building as closely as possible to its original appearance. I do not intend to
make changes that would significantly alter its historic character or architectural features.
Based on my initial observations, the building's gutters are filled with dirt and vegetation, which has
allowed water to pool on the roof. This has led to deterioration of portions of the façade and has
directed water onto the window sills, resulting in water intrusion and rot. The moisture has also caused
deterioration of the mortar in several areas.
To address these issues, I anticipate the need to:
• Replace deteriorated sections of the façade with materials that match the existing appearance.
• Replace the gutters and add downspouts to properly direct water away from the building.
• Repair or repoint deteriorated mortar where necessary.
• Repair or replace rotted window sills with materials that match the original design.
• Repaint repaired areas to match the building's existing appearance.
I am not seeking formal approval through this letter. Rather, I am hoping to determine whether the
Board would have any general objections to these types of one-for-one restoration repairs, or whether
there are specific preservation requirements I should be aware of before purchasing the property.
I am committed to preserving this historic building rather than changing it. At the same time, I am not a
large commercial developer, and the building also has significant interior repairs that will require
substantial investment. Before proceeding with the purchase, I would simply like to understand whether
the proposed restoration work would generally be supported and whether there are additional
requirements I should anticipate.
I appreciate your time and any guidance you can provide. Thank you for your consideration, and I look
forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Gideon Bernthal
