- What's covered
- Every day care and residential child care operation HHSC shows on its public Child Care Search (licensed centers, licensed and registered child-care homes, listed family homes, general residential operations, child-placing agencies), with every inspection, investigation and assessment from October 2017 and each cited deficiency with its risk weight and correction dates.
- History
- From 2017-10
- How often we sync
- Daily at 06:40 Central, after HHSC's overnight refresh of the open-data portal.
- Last complete sync

- 412,412 inspections investigations assessments
- 270,406 deficiencies

- How we get it
- Public API (Socrata SODA on data.texas.gov), read in full each run with keyset paging; each run is verified against the dataset's own row count.
- Terms
- Published on data.texas.gov under Creative Commons 1.0 Universal (public domain dedication), as listed on each dataset (checked 2026-10-01). No sign-up or app token used.
- Attribution
- Source: Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Child Care Regulation (data.texas.gov).
Known gaps
- HHSC's operations dataset lists open and recently closed operations only; inspections of operations no longer listed are counted (activities_for_operations_not_listed) but not shown.
- Investigation findings and narratives beyond the cited deficiency, complaint intakes and older history require a Texas Public Information Act request to HHSC.
- Corrective and adverse actions are published as current yes/no flags, not dated actions; the date shown is when this site first saw the flag.
- The 'sections and standards evaluated' dataset (~1M rows) is not loaded; per-visit counts are deficiencies cited, not standards checked.
- Texas Rising Star quality ratings are not in these datasets.
How violation severity is mapped
Every cited violation is filed as serious, non-serious or unknown. Unknown is never counted as a clean record.
| The source says | We file it as | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Deficiency of a standard HHSC weights High | serious | HHSC's top risk weight. HHSC weights each minimum standard High, Medium-High, Medium, Medium-Low or Low by the risk a violation poses to children; it has no separate 'serious' label. |
| Deficiency of a standard weighted Medium-High, Medium, Medium-Low or Low | non-serious | The weight is shown with every deficiency on the program page. |
| Deficiency with no weight published | unknown |
